Chapter 19 - THE LAST DNA ENVELOPE

Vanessa wanted one thing.

The original DNA envelope.

Not the digital copy.

The physical envelope Michael had created years earlier.

I did not understand why.

Michael did.

“The storage strip has a second partition.”

“What’s on it?”

He looked ashamed.

“The names of the children.”

“What children?”

“Every child Meridian created or monitored.”

My stomach turned.

Sofia was not the only one.

There were dozens.

Some were adults now.

Some had no idea.

Vanessa wanted control of the list.

She told us to meet her at an abandoned courthouse outside the city.

No federal agents.

No trackers.

Luka refused.

“She’ll kill you.”

“She has Sofia.”

“So we find another way.”

“There is no other way.”

Michael stepped between us.

“There is.”

He opened the envelope carefully.

The strip could be removed.

We copied the second partition and replaced it with a blank duplicate.

The envelope looked untouched.

At midnight, Luka and I entered the courthouse.

Vanessa stood beneath the old judge’s bench.

Sofia was in a carrier beside her.

She was crying.

Every cell in my body screamed to run toward her.

Vanessa held a gun.

“Envelope.”

I held it up.

“Baby first.”

She laughed.

“You’re in no position to negotiate.”

Luka stepped forward.

“Take me instead.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You really believe biology makes you a father?”

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“Staying does.”

I looked at him.

Those words hit harder than I expected.

Vanessa motioned for me to slide the envelope across the floor.

I did.

She picked it up.

Then Daniel appeared from behind the courtroom door.

I stared at him.

His face was bruised from the detention attack.

Vanessa looked shocked.

“How did you get out?”

“Protective transfer.”

He stepped closer.

“You ruined my life.”

She smiled.

“You ruined your own life.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You were right.”

“About what?”

“I was a coward.”

His eyes moved to Sofia.

“I left the only two people who ever trusted me.”

Vanessa raised the gun toward him.

Daniel did not move.

“You want someone to punish?”

He opened his arms.

“Punish me.”

Her attention shifted.

That was the opening Luka needed.

He crossed the distance in seconds.

The gun hit the floor.

I ran to Sofia.

I pulled her against my chest.

She screamed once.

Then she recognized my voice.

“Mommy’s here.”

I sobbed into her hair.

“Mommy’s here.”

Police lights flooded the windows.

Vanessa was arrested.

Daniel sank to his knees.

Not because anyone forced him.

Because when he saw me holding Sofia while Luka stood beside us, the full weight of what he had thrown away finally reached him.

“Elena.”

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

I believed he meant it.

It still was not enough.

He reached into his coat.

“There’s one more thing you need to know.”

He held out another sealed envelope.

I stared at it.

“What is that?”

May you like

Daniel’s hands shook.

“The DNA result Vale never showed anyone.”
