Chapter 8 - THE NAME MY MOTHER NEVER SPOKE

I called my mother at two in the morning.

She answered on the first ring.

“Elena?”

Her voice was trembling.

“Mom, who is my father?”

Silence.

Not confusion.

Not shock.

Silence.

The kind built from years of fear.

“Michael was your father.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“Elena.”

“Who is my biological father?”

She started crying.

I closed my eyes.

Across the room, Luka watched me.

My mother whispered.

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

“Is Luka Moretti with you?”

I almost stopped breathing.

“You know Luka?”

Another silence.

Everything in my life seemed to be built from silences.

“I knew his family.”

“Mom, tell me the truth.”

She began speaking.

Twenty-six years earlier, she had worked as a laboratory assistant at Meridian Biomedical.

Michael Hart was already investigating financial irregularities there.

My mother, Claire, had discovered something worse.

The researchers were keeping unauthorized genetic samples from employees, patients, and family members.

One sample was labeled M-17.

It belonged to a man whose identity was restricted even inside Meridian.

My mother had been told to destroy it.

She did not.

Months later, after a relationship she refused to describe, she became pregnant with me.

Michael knew the baby was not biologically his.

He married her anyway.

He gave me his name.

He raised me as his daughter.

“And my biological father?”

My mother sobbed.

“I promised Michael I would never tell you.”

“Michael is alive.”

The line went silent.

Then my mother made a sound I had never heard before.

A broken gasp.

“You saw him?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Luka.”

My mother whispered something in Italian.

Luka stepped closer.

“What did she say?”

I put the phone on speaker.

My mother heard him.

“Luka.”

“Claire.”

Her breathing became uneven.

“You were supposed to burn the file.”

“I did.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“I burned the original.”

My mother started crying harder.

“Elena cannot know who M-17 belongs to.”

“I think she has the right.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if Arthur Vale discovers she knows, Sofia becomes leverage.”

I felt my skin turn cold.

“Mom.”

She went quiet.

“You already know my daughter’s name.”

Another mistake.

Another secret.

Before she could explain, something crashed on her end of the call.

“Mom?”

A man shouted.

My mother screamed.

Then the line went dead.

I stood.

Luka was already reaching for his coat.

“Where does she live?”

I told him.

Marcus grabbed his keys.

Ten minutes later, we were racing across the city.

When we reached my mother’s house, the front door was open.

The living room had been destroyed.

There was blood on the kitchen floor.

But my mother was gone.
