Chapter 20 - THE TRUTH THAT BROUGHT HIM TO HIS KNEES

Three weeks later, we opened the final envelope.

Not in a warehouse.

Not inside a secret clinic.

Not while someone held a gun.

We opened it at my mother’s kitchen table.

Sofia slept in Luka’s arms.

Michael sat beside me.

My mother sat across from us.

Daniel attended through a secure video call from federal custody.

He had accepted a plea agreement.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

Illegal access to medical records.

He would serve time.

His testimony would help prosecute dozens of people connected to Meridian.

Arthur Vale had been denied bail.

Vanessa faced kidnapping charges in addition to her Meridian crimes.

For once, powerful people were learning that consequences could not always be purchased.

I broke the envelope seal.

Inside was the earliest complete genetic report on Sofia.

The report confirmed Luka as her biological father.

But that was not the secret that made Daniel turn white on the screen.

At the bottom was another relationship analysis.

DANIEL REED.

BIOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIP TO SUBJECT ELENA HART.

SECOND-DEGREE PATERNAL LINE MATCH.

I stared at Michael.

“What does that mean?”

Michael looked toward Daniel.

Daniel began crying.

His father had not merely worked for Vale.

He had been Michael’s half brother.

Daniel and I were related through the Hart family.

Not closely enough that Meridian cared about ethics.

But closely enough that they had known from the beginning.

My marriage had been designed not for love.

Not even simply for access.

It had been designed to combine two branches of a bloodline Meridian had been tracking for generations.

Daniel covered his face.

“They knew.”

“Yes,” Michael said.

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at me.

“And he still pushed me toward her.”

Michael’s expression was cold.

“Yes.”

Daniel slid from his chair on the video screen.

He literally fell to his knees.

For years, Daniel had believed he had been the man making choices.

He had cheated.

He had taken money.

He had abandoned his newborn.

He had convinced himself he was protecting his future.

Now he understood that the same people he served had treated him exactly as he had treated me.

As a disposable piece.

He looked up at the camera.

“Elena, please.”

I knew what he wanted.

Forgiveness.

Freedom from the weight.

I could not give him either.

“I hope you become a better man.”

He cried harder.

“But you will become that man somewhere far away from my daughter.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

For the first time, I believed he did.

The call ended.

Silence settled around the kitchen.

Then Sofia woke.

Luka looked terrified.

I laughed.

“What?”

“She’s making that face.”

“What face?”

“The one before she screams.”

Sofia screamed.

Everyone laughed.

Even Michael.

It was ordinary.

Messy.

Real.

And after months of learning how completely strangers had tried to engineer our lives, ordinary felt like freedom.

Michael eventually testified publicly.

So did my mother.

The Meridian network collapsed under lawsuits, criminal investigations, and the release of thousands of hidden records.

Families learned truths that had been buried for decades.

Some were devastated.

Others finally received answers.

The medical research itself was transferred to independent institutions under strict ethical oversight.

Sofia’s DNA was removed from every private Meridian database we could find.

Luka never asked me to change her last name.

He never demanded the word father.

He showed up.

Every feeding.

Every pediatric appointment.

Every sleepless night.

Months later, I found the original hospital birth certificate inside a box.

Luka’s signature still crossed the line marked FATHER.

I carried it to him.

“You knew before anyone else.”

He shook his head.

“I guessed wrong for the right reason.”

“What reason?”

He looked at Sofia sleeping against his chest.

“That no child should ever be abandoned because an adult is afraid.”

I thought about the hospital corridor.

Daniel walking away.

Luka walking toward us.

One man had been legally my husband.

The other had been a stranger.

But family, I had learned, was not proven by paperwork.

It was proven by who stayed when leaving would have been easier.

A year after Sofia’s birth, Michael handed me one final box.

“I found this among Arthur Vale’s sealed records.”

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

And a file labeled M-18.

I stared at him.

“I thought Meridian was finished.”

“So did I.”

Luka came closer.

“What’s M-18?”

Michael’s face lost all color.

“I don’t know.”

I opened the folder.

The first page contained a photograph of a little boy.

He looked about six years old.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

A familiar scar above one eyebrow.

Luka stopped breathing.

Under the photograph was a single sentence.

SUBJECT M-18.

MALE.

BIOLOGICAL PATERNAL MATCH: LUKA MORETTI.

I looked at Luka.

Sofia was not the first child Meridian had created from his stolen DNA.

Somewhere out there, another child was waiting.

May you like

And this time, we were going to find him before anyone else did.
