Chapter 11 - THE MAN ON THE CURB

Julian refused to leave.

He placed the suitcase on the marble floor and demanded a room.

Naomi explained that his reservation privileges had been suspended.

He demanded access to the penthouse.

She reminded him that it was my private residence.

He asked for a company car.

The transportation department had already revoked his authorization.

Finally, he reached for his wallet.

Both corporate cards were inactive.

His personal accounts were under temporary banking review because of the offshore transfers.

Julian had spent years boasting that he controlled an empire.

At 2:36 a.m., he could not pay for a taxi.

I watched from the mezzanine.

Part of me expected to feel victorious.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

This man had once held my hand while we stood on an empty hillside and imagined the resort that would rise there.

He had once carried tile samples through the rain.

He had once promised that success would never change us.

Perhaps that version of Julian had been real.

Perhaps it had disappeared slowly.

Or perhaps I had loved a performance so deeply that I never examined the actor.

Julian looked up and saw me.

“Elena.”

I descended the stairs.

The lobby staff remained nearby, uncertain whether to leave us alone.

Julian lowered his voice.

“I need to speak with you privately.”

“There is nothing private left.”

“I know I hurt you.”

“That is not the main issue.”

“I made terrible decisions.”

“You made plans.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing everything.”

I looked around the lobby.

“You never had everything.”

His face tightened.

“That’s easy for you to say.”

“You were born with security.”

“I came from nothing.”

“And I helped you build something.”

“You always had a way out.”

He pointed toward my father.

“One phone call, and the entire world changed.”

I considered his words.

There was truth inside them.

My family’s protection had given me choices Julian never had.

But hardship did not force him to steal.

Fear did not force him to humiliate me.

Insecurity did not force him to place a mistress in my home.

“You could have asked me the truth,” I said.

“Would you have told me?”

“Before tonight, yes.”

“When?”

“When you remembered how to treat me as a partner.”

He looked away.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe you did.”

“I still do.”

“No.”

My answer made him flinch.

“You love what you believed standing beside me made you.”

Julian picked up the suitcase.

“What happens now?”

“The investigation continues.”

“And our marriage?”

“My attorneys will contact yours.”

He looked toward the doors.

“I have nowhere to go.”

The sentence echoed what he had said to me earlier.

Your time in my world is over.

I could have repeated it.

I did not.

“Naomi has arranged a car to take you to a hotel in the city,” I said.

His expression shifted with surprise.

“Why would you help me?”

“I’m not helping you.”

“I’m protecting the staff from another scene.”

The car arrived.

Julian walked through the same doors where I had stood in the rain.

Before entering the vehicle, he turned back.

“Elena, you hid your name from me.”

“I never hid my name.”

“I hid what you thought it was worth.”

The car carried him away.

At the curb, investigators remained beside an unmarked vehicle.

One of them received a call.

He approached Celia and spoke quietly.

Martin Voss had attempted to board a private plane.

Inside his luggage, agents had found a second portable drive.

May you like

It contained documents unrelated to Aurelia.

The files suggested Julian’s fraud had begun years earlier.
