Chapter 4 - THE KINGDOM HE NEVER OWNED

Julian answered the call while standing in the rain.

I could hear the banker’s voice through the speaker.

“Mr. Hart, we have received notice that the property collateral presented during your expansion discussions is not controlled by Aurelia Hospitality.”

Julian wiped rain from his face.

“There’s been a misunderstanding.”

“The deeds are held by Meridian Land Holdings.”

“Meridian is part of Aurelia.”

“No, it is not.”

Julian looked at me.

“The companies operate together.”

“Operational cooperation does not establish ownership.”

The banker’s tone remained formal.

“Your financing proposal represented that Aurelia Hospitality possessed long-term control over twelve resort properties.”

“We do.”

“The management agreements can be terminated for cause.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“They will not be terminated.”

“They have already been suspended pending review.”

The banker paused.

“Until ownership and authority are established, the European credit facility is frozen.”

The call ended.

Julian lowered the phone slowly.

Behind him, investors were gathering near the lobby windows.

Vanessa stood beneath the entrance canopy, clutching my coat around her shoulders.

She looked less like a victorious mistress and more like someone who had climbed onto a ship after noticing the hull was already sinking.

Julian leaned toward me.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

“You created a trap.”

“My grandmother created protection.”

“You let me believe I owned everything.”

“I let you believe we were building it together.”

“You deceived me.”

I looked at him through the open car door.

“For nine years, I never claimed you owned the land.”

“You never told me you did.”

“You never asked who signed the deeds.”

“I was your husband.”

“You were also the chief executive officer.”

“You should have understood the structure of the business you claimed to control.”

His eyes hardened.

“This is revenge because I chose Vanessa.”

“This is not about who you chose.”

I glanced toward the two guards who had dragged me from the lobby.

“This is about what you did after you chose her.”

Julian straightened.

“You cannot remove me from Aurelia Hospitality.”

“I don’t need to.”

I pointed toward the building.

“Without the Aurelia name, without the properties, and without the reservation system, your company is an office with payroll obligations.”

The realization reached him slowly.

He owned shares in the operator.

My family owned everything the operator needed to survive.

Vanessa stepped into the rain.

“Julian, do something.”

He turned on her.

“Go upstairs.”

“My things are in the penthouse.”

“You heard me.”

Vanessa walked to the lobby and pressed her keycard against the door leading to the private elevator corridor.

The light flashed red.

She tried again.

Naomi approached her.

“Ms. Cole, the penthouse is registered as a private residence belonging to the property owner.”

“I’ve been staying there for three weeks.”

“That does not give you legal possession.”

“My clothes are upstairs.”

“They will be inventoried and delivered to the address you provide.”

Vanessa touched the emerald pendant.

Naomi’s gaze settled on it.

“That item must remain here.”

Vanessa stepped back.

“Excuse me?”

“It has been reported as unauthorized property.”

Julian hurried inside.

“Leave her alone.”

Naomi looked at him.

“Mr. Hart, you no longer have authority to issue instructions to resort staff.”

Julian’s voice echoed through the silent lobby.

“I am still the CEO.”

A new voice answered from the mezzanine.

“Not for long.”

Everyone looked up.

Marcus Hale, Aurelia Hospitality’s chief financial officer, stood above us holding a sealed envelope.

“The board has called an emergency meeting,” he announced.

“And Elena has just exercised the voting rights you never knew she possessed.”
