Chapter 13 - THE LAST MOVE

Julian left the hotel through a service entrance twelve minutes before investigators arrived.

The security camera showed him wearing a maintenance jacket and carrying a laptop bag.

He took a taxi to the private airfield where Martin had been arrested.

When he learned the plane had been seized, he changed direction.

At 4:03 a.m., Julian entered Aurelia’s unfinished vineyard villas through a construction gate.

His old executive credentials no longer worked, but the site supervisor had not yet changed a manual access code.

Northstar detected the entry.

Naomi immediately locked down the construction zone.

Security surrounded the main villa.

Julian called me.

I answered from the resort’s command center.

“You’re making this worse,” I said.

“I need twenty minutes.”

“For what?”

“To show you something.”

“Come outside.”

“Not until you listen.”

Investigators traced the call to the unfinished villa.

Through the security cameras, we saw Julian enter a temporary office.

He opened a wall safe.

Inside were paper ledgers and another laptop.

“I kept records Martin doesn’t know about,” he said.

“Bring them outside.”

“Not without an agreement.”

“You are negotiating with the wrong person.”

“You control the trust.”

“I do not control prosecutors.”

“You can tell them I cooperated.”

“You can cooperate without conditions.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“You sound like your father.”

“That is no longer an insult.”

He became quiet.

Then he said something unexpected.

“Martin planned to take the European funds and disappear.”

“Vanessa said the money was for your new company.”

“That was the story he gave her.”

“And what was your story?”

“I thought we were moving it temporarily.”

“You created offshore accounts.”

“To protect the capital until the land sale closed.”

“You attempted to sell land that was not yours.”

“I believed you would sign.”

“After you destroyed my reputation?”

“I believed you would have no choice.”

His honesty was more disturbing than another lie.

He truly believed that if he removed enough of my support, I would surrender.

“Julian, carry the records outside.”

“What happens to me?”

“That depends on everything you did.”

“What happens to us?”

“There is no us.”

The line remained silent.

On the camera feed, he closed the laptop.

“I cannot leave with nothing.”

“You are not entitled to what belongs to someone else.”

“I gave this company my life.”

“So did I.”

“You still have everything.”

“No.”

My voice cracked for the first time.

“I lost nine years believing the man beside me would never become the man inside those emails.”

Julian lowered his head.

Outside the villa, an officer spoke through a loudspeaker.

“Mr. Hart, exit with your hands visible.”

Julian picked up the ledgers.

For one moment, I thought he would surrender.

Then smoke appeared beside the desk.

He had ignited documents in a metal trash can.

The fire alarm activated.

Sprinklers released across the unfinished villa.

Water struck the laptop and scattered burning paper.

Security officers entered.

Julian attempted to escape through a rear corridor.

His keycard failed at the final exterior door.

The light flashed red.

He tried again.

Red.

The officers reached him moments later.

The camera showed Julian standing before the locked door, soaked by the sprinklers, still gripping the useless keycard.

He did not resist when they placed him in handcuffs.

Before they led him away, he looked directly into the security camera.

He knew I was watching.

His lips formed two words.

I’m sorry.

At 4:27 a.m., Julian Hart left the Aurelia estate in the back of an unmarked vehicle.

For the first time since our marriage, he left without me.
