Chapter 3 - THE FIRST DOOR CLOSES

I signed the control transfer at 8:47 p.m.

At 8:49, my father activated the Devereaux Family Trust’s emergency protection clause.

At 8:51, Crown Aurelia Licensing suspended Julian’s authority to use the Aurelia name for any new transaction.

At 8:53, Northstar Systems revoked his executive access to the reservation network.

At 8:55, Meridian Land Holdings issued a notice stating that Aurelia Hospitality Operations was in material violation of its property-management agreement.

The violations included misconduct, unauthorized transfer of private property, abuse of security personnel, and conduct damaging to the estate’s reputation.

Julian did not understand what was happening at first.

He continued smiling for photographs beside Vanessa.

Then his phone began vibrating.

The first message came from the resort’s general manager, Naomi Price.

EXECUTIVE ACCESS REVIEW IN PROGRESS.

The second came from Northstar Systems.

YOUR ADMINISTRATIVE CREDENTIALS HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED.

The third came from the private bank financing Aurelia’s European expansion.

EMERGENCY MEETING REQUESTED.

Julian excused himself from the investors and hurried toward the executive elevator.

Vanessa followed.

I watched from Celia’s sedan as Julian pressed his keycard against the elevator panel.

The light flashed red.

He tried again.

Red.

He shouted at a security officer.

The officer approached the panel and used his own card.

The elevator opened.

Julian stepped forward.

The officer blocked him.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Hart.”

“What do you mean, you’re sorry?”

“Your access has been temporarily suspended.”

“I own this resort.”

Naomi Price crossed the lobby before the officer could answer.

Naomi had managed the flagship property for six years.

She was calm, precise, and loyal to the rules rather than personalities.

Julian pointed at the elevator.

“Fix this.”

Naomi held a tablet against her chest.

“I can’t.”

“You can and you will.”

“My orders came from the property owner.”

Julian’s face tightened.

“I am the property owner.”

Naomi looked toward the glass doors.

For a moment, our eyes met through the rain.

Then she turned back to him.

“No, Mr. Hart.”

“You are the operating-company executive.”

“The property owner is Meridian Land Holdings.”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“That’s one of Julian’s companies.”

Naomi shook her head.

“It is not.”

The nearest guests began listening.

Julian lowered his voice.

“Who controls Meridian?”

“I’m not authorized to discuss ownership with you.”

“I am the chief executive officer.”

“Not of Meridian.”

Julian snatched Naomi’s tablet.

The screen displayed an organizational chart.

At the center was Aurelia Hospitality Operations.

Above it were three separate entities.

Meridian Land Holdings.

Crown Aurelia Licensing.

Northstar Systems.

Each line led to the same controlling authority.

THE DEVEREAUX FAMILY TRUST.

Julian stared at the name.

Vanessa looked confused.

“Devereaux is Elena’s maiden name.”

Julian’s eyes lifted toward the entrance.

He saw me inside Celia’s sedan.

For the first time that night, he stopped smiling.

He threw the tablet back at Naomi and marched toward the doors.

The security guards moved aside.

He stepped into the rain.

“What did you do?” he demanded.

I remained seated.

“I didn’t do anything.”

“You locked me out.”

“I merely stopped protecting you from the truth.”

Julian grabbed the open car door.

“What truth?”

Celia leaned forward from the front seat.

“The truth that your wife owns the ground beneath your shoes.”

Julian stared at her.

May you like

Then the bank called again.

This time, the caller identification displayed the name of the man financing his entire European expansion.
