Chapter 9 - THE NIGHTFALL FILES

The Nightfall emails revealed that my removal from the gala had not been an impulsive act.
Julian had planned every moment.
He instructed security to escort me through the center of the lobby rather than a private exit.
He wanted investors to see me humiliated.
He wanted staff members to believe I no longer held influence.
He wanted photographs of Vanessa beside him while she wore my coat and pendant.
The public spectacle was designed to establish a new reality before the divorce became public.
In that reality, Julian controlled Aurelia.
Vanessa was his partner.
I was the rejected wife who had lost everything.
One email from Martin explained the strategy.
PUBLIC PERCEPTION WILL ASSIST LEGAL CONTROL.
Another recommended provoking me into an angry outburst.
A recording of that outburst could support their claim that I was unstable.
That was why Julian had taken my grandmother’s pendant.
That was why Vanessa wore it publicly.
They expected me to scream.
They expected me to strike her or beg Julian to reconsider.
Instead, I called my father.
Julian stood behind me as I read the messages.
“I never approved some of those statements.”
“You replied to them.”
“I was angry.”
“You wrote that I needed to be broken before I could be controlled.”
His mouth tightened.
“That was business language.”
“It was written about your wife.”
Vanessa sat on the edge of a conference table.
She looked exhausted.
“Julian said you had been planning to leave him.”
I faced her.
“Did he tell you that before or after giving you my jewelry?”
“He said you had abandoned the marriage.”
“I spent the last month renovating the Arizona property for the company.”
“He said you used work as an excuse to stay away.”
Julian interrupted.
“Vanessa, stop helping her.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You are still giving orders?”
“I can protect both of us.”
“How?”
“We maintain that the consulting payments were authorized.”
Marcus looked up from the computer.
“The emails say otherwise.”
He displayed a message from Julian to Vanessa.
MOVE THE FUNDS BEFORE ELENA RETURNS.
Another message followed.
ONCE THE LAND IS TRANSFERRED, SHE WILL HAVE NO LEVERAGE.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
“You said those were deleted.”
Julian closed his eyes.
The room became silent.
Celia contacted federal financial investigators.
Because resort funds had crossed international borders through false contracts, the matter had moved beyond an internal company dispute.
My father did not celebrate.
Neither did I.
I had spent nine years believing Julian’s worst failure was arrogance.
The emails proved something colder.
He had been willing to erase my identity, steal my inheritance, and rewrite our history to protect the illusion that he was a self-made king.
At 1:34 a.m., the first law-enforcement officers arrived.
They interviewed Naomi, Marcus, the security director, and the guards who had removed me.
The guards admitted that Julian had specifically ordered them to use visible force if I resisted.
One of them handed investigators his phone.
Julian’s instructions were saved in writing.
The investigator turned toward him.
“Mr. Hart, we need you to remain available for questioning.”
Julian looked at me.
“You called the police on your own husband.”
“No.”
I held up the Nightfall file.
“You invited them when you wrote this.”
Then Vanessa’s phone began ringing.
She looked at the screen and went pale.
May you like
The caller was her brother.
Federal agents were standing outside his house.
