Chapter 12 - THE EMERALD WITNESS
The emerald necklace returned to Margaret inside an evidence bag.
She sat in an interview room while a detective placed it on the table.
The necklace had belonged to her mother.
For decades, Margaret had claimed it represented the dignity of the Whitmore family.
Now it represented fraud, conspiracy, and humiliation.
The jewelry broker’s video showed Brenda entering his office.
She had signed a statement claiming the necklace belonged to her.
She had accepted eight hundred thousand dollars.
She had then transferred most of the money to Julian Mercer.
Brenda’s attorney advised her to cooperate.
Within hours, she admitted everything.
She confessed that Margaret wanted Mariana removed.
She confessed that she created the theft accusation.
She confessed that Andrew knew of the plan to provoke a confrontation, though she insisted he did not know the necklace had actually been taken.
Most importantly, she provided messages.
In one exchange, Margaret wrote that Mariana needed to be “taught her place.”
In another, Andrew promised Brenda that the mansion would become hers after the divorce.
A third message was sent only twenty minutes before Mariana arrived that evening.
MAKE HER ANGRY.
I NEED WITNESSES TO SAY SHE WAS UNSTABLE.
The message had come from Andrew.
He had not known about the stolen necklace.
But he had known Brenda planned a public confrontation.
He wanted Mariana humiliated.
He wanted witnesses who could later support his divorce claims.
The slap had not been an accident.
The evening had been designed to break her reputation.
Helena showed the messages to Mariana.
They sat in the Escalante Capital legal office.
Mariana read each word slowly.
The betrayal was deeper than she had imagined.
Andrew had not lost control in a moment of anger.
He had been preparing to destroy her.
“Why did he need witnesses?” Mariana asked.
Helena opened another document.
“Because of this.”
It was a draft petition accusing Mariana of emotional instability, financial misconduct, and theft.
Andrew planned to remove her from the company by claiming she was incapable of making responsible decisions.
“He was going to use my silence against me,” Mariana said.
“He believed you would be too ashamed to fight publicly.”
Mariana placed the document on the desk.
“For four years, I kept every insult private.”
“He counted on that continuing.”
“What happens now?”
“Brenda has agreed to testify.”
“In exchange for what?”
“A reduced civil claim and consideration from prosecutors.”
Mariana looked through the glass wall at the city.
Brenda had helped create the trap.
Now she was trying to escape by pointing toward the others.
“Do not protect her,” Mariana said.
“We won’t.”
“But do not punish her beyond what the evidence supports.”
Helena studied her.
“You are being generous.”
“No.”
“I am being precise.”
