Chapter 13 - THE EMPLOYEES CHOSE SIDES
Whitmore Global employed more than twelve thousand people.
For days, rumors spread through its offices.
Some employees feared the company would collapse.
Others expected mass layoffs.
Andrew used that fear.
Through a private email account, he contacted regional directors and warned them that Mariana planned to dismantle Whitmore Global.
He claimed Escalante Capital wanted to sell the assets and eliminate the Whitmore name.
He asked senior managers to follow him into a new company.
At first, several agreed.
Andrew promised generous salaries and ownership shares.
He did not tell them he had no financing.
He did not tell them the company’s contracts, technology, and licenses belonged to Escalante subsidiaries.
He believed loyalty to his name would be enough.
Mariana called a company-wide meeting.
Thousands of employees joined through a secure broadcast.
She stood on the same stage where Andrew had accepted awards for strategies she created.
“I know many of you are afraid,” she began.
“You have heard that Whitmore Global is being destroyed.”
“That is not true.”
“What is being removed is the behavior that placed your jobs at risk.”
She presented the company’s actual condition.
She did not hide the unauthorized debt.
She did not hide Andrew’s transfers.
She did not blame employees for trusting the wrong leadership.
“The company will be reorganized,” she said.
“No ordinary employee will lose a job because of Andrew’s misconduct.”
“Existing wages and benefits will be protected.”
“A new employee ownership program will be created.”
“For the first time, the people who build this company will share directly in its success.”
The response was immediate.
Regional directors withdrew their support from Andrew.
Managers forwarded his private emails to Helena.
Employees who had remained silent began reporting suspicious instructions they had received.
One accountant revealed that Andrew ordered her to change the description of several payments.
A project manager produced recordings of Andrew demanding that safety costs be reduced.
An assistant submitted copies of travel invoices connected to Brenda.
The empire Andrew claimed as his own had never been supported by loyalty.
It had been supported by fear.
The moment the fear disappeared, so did his authority.
That afternoon, Andrew entered a rented office where he planned to launch Whitmore International.
Only three people arrived.
Two left after learning there was no payroll account.
The third was a young attorney sent by Helena.
He placed a legal notice on the desk.
Andrew was prohibited from using protected Whitmore Global designs, client information, software, or trademarks.
Even the new company name violated an existing agreement.
Andrew stared at the notice.
“What am I allowed to use?”
The attorney gathered his briefcase.
