Chapter 8 - FOUR POINT SIX MILLION LIES

Daniel Kim began presenting the financial evidence.

Each transaction appeared on the screen with a date, authorization code, and destination account.

Andrew had approved every payment to B.L. Strategic Partners.

The company had no employees.

It had no office.

It had never completed a consulting project.

Its only purpose was to receive money.

Brenda stared at the table.

One board member removed his glasses.

“Mr. Whitmore, why did you authorize payments of this size?”

Andrew forced himself to remain calm.

“Brenda provided strategic advice.”

“What kind of advice?”

“Market development.”

“In which markets?”

Andrew hesitated.

Daniel answered for him.

“B.L. Strategic Partners filed no reports, produced no research, and submitted identical invoices for fourteen consecutive months.”

The next slide showed photographs of purchases made from Brenda’s account.

Designer clothing.

A luxury apartment.

International flights.

Jewelry.

A sports car registered under another man’s name.

Andrew turned toward her.

“Who is Julian Mercer?”

Brenda looked up sharply.

Daniel changed the slide.

A photograph showed Brenda standing beside a man outside a private airport terminal.

The date was six weeks earlier.

“They traveled to Zurich together,” Daniel said.

“Funds transferred from Whitmore Global were moved into an account controlled by Mr. Mercer two days later.”

Andrew’s voice became low.

“You were leaving with him.”

Brenda’s eyes flashed.

“You were never going to leave Mariana.”

“I threw her out last night.”

“After a year of promises.”

“You told me the money was for our future.”

“It was for my future.”

A murmur moved around the table.

Margaret struck the table with her palm.

“This is not relevant.”

“It is extremely relevant,” Helena replied.

“Company funds financed the relationship and Brenda’s attempted departure.”

Andrew turned toward Mariana.

“You investigated me.”

Mariana remained still.

“No.”

“I investigated missing corporate funds.”

“You had no right.”

“I own the controlling interests.”

“You are my wife.”

The room fell silent.

Mariana’s voice stayed calm.

“Not for much longer.”

Andrew stepped away from the table.

“You think you can humiliate me?”

Mariana looked at the faint reflection of herself in the polished wood.

“I did not bring your mistress into our company.”

“I did not transfer millions of dollars to her.”

“I did not steal Margaret’s necklace.”

“And I did not raise your hand and strike me.”

“You created every fact presented in this room.”

“I simply stopped hiding them.”

Andrew stared at her.

For years, Mariana had protected him from consequences.

He had mistaken protection for weakness.

Now that protection was gone.

Helena distributed a written resolution.

“The board will vote on the immediate suspension of Andrew Whitmore as chief executive officer.”

Andrew laughed.

“You cannot remove me from a company carrying my name.”

Mariana picked up her pen.

“A name is not ownership.”

One by one, the board members voted.

The final result was eleven in favor.

May you like

One opposed.

Andrew cast the only vote to save himself.
