Chapter 14 - MARGARET’S LAST DEFENSE
Margaret refused to accept defeat.
She hired a private attorney and filed a claim arguing that the Escalante agreements had been created through deception.
She described Mariana as a manipulative woman who secretly seized control of the Whitmore family legacy.
For one day, several newspapers repeated the accusation.
Margaret appeared outside the courthouse wearing black and speaking to cameras.
“My son was targeted by a woman who wanted our name,” she declared.
“She entered our family with nothing.”
“She took advantage of his trust.”
Mariana watched the interview from her office.
She did not respond immediately.
Instead, Helena prepared the original financial records.
The documents showed that Whitmore Global was nearly insolvent before Mariana’s intervention.
They showed that the Escalante family paid overdue wages when Andrew could not.
They showed that Mariana personally secured the contracts that saved the company.
They also showed Andrew and Margaret signing every agreement.
Neither had been deceived.
They had simply believed Mariana would never enforce the terms.
At the preliminary hearing, Margaret took the witness stand.
Her attorney asked whether she understood that Escalante Capital would eventually control Whitmore Global.
“No,” Margaret said.
Helena approached her.
“Is this your signature?”
“Yes.”
“And this?”
“Yes.”
“And this document?”
“I signed many documents during that period.”
“Did anyone prevent you from reading them?”
“No.”
“Did you have independent legal counsel?”
“Yes.”
“Did that attorney explain the agreements?”
Margaret’s eyes shifted toward Andrew.
“I trusted my son.”
“That was not my question.”
Margaret’s voice became sharper.
“Yes.”
Helena displayed a letter Margaret had written after the rescue agreement.
The letter thanked Mariana for preserving the Whitmore family’s reputation.
It also acknowledged that the Escalante trust held controlling ownership.
Margaret stared at her own words.
The courtroom grew silent.
“You knew,” Helena said.
Margaret’s face tightened.
“I knew there were conditions.”
“You knew Mariana saved the company.”
Margaret looked toward Mariana.
For the first time, something beyond hatred appeared in her expression.
Shame.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you repeatedly tell her she came from nothing?”
Margaret did not answer.
Helena waited.
Finally, Margaret whispered the truth.
“Because she made us feel small.”
Mariana closed her eyes.
There it was.
The cruelty had never been about her background.
Margaret had known exactly who Mariana was.
She insulted her because Mariana’s strength exposed the weakness behind the Whitmore name.
The judge denied Margaret’s claim.
