Chapter 10 - THE CONDO

Richard entered my building at 3:11 in the morning.
He used a master access card taken from Adrian’s office.
My condo remained under police surveillance.
Detectives watched him through the hallway camera as he unlocked the door.
They expected him to search for evidence.
Instead, he carried a red gasoline container.
Richard poured fuel across my living room rug.
He moved toward the office where my financial documents had been stored.
Before he could strike a match, officers entered through the bedroom and kitchen doors.
Richard drew a handgun.
He grabbed Detective Torres and pulled her against his chest.
The weapon pressed beneath her jaw.
Through the live surveillance feed, I watched from the secure apartment.
Richard shouted that he would not spend his life in prison because of women who did not understand loyalty.
Torres remained calm.
“You are surrounded.”
“You have no exit.”
“My family built every exit.”
He demanded a vehicle and access to the foundation accounts.
The accounts had already been frozen.
When police refused, he dragged Torres toward the balcony.
Below them, Mission Bay glowed beneath the early morning sky.
Richard looked toward the security camera.
He knew I was watching.
“This condo was never yours,” he said.
“It belonged to the family the moment Adrian married you.”
I stepped toward the monitor.
The federal agent beside me warned me not to respond.
I activated the speaker anyway.
“No, Richard.”
“My home was never yours.”
“My work was never yours.”
“My silence was never yours.”
He fired at the camera.
The image shattered into static.
Gunshots followed.
For three unbearable seconds, no one inside the command room moved.
Then the police radio came alive.
Richard had fired twice.
Neither bullet struck Torres.
A tactical officer shot Richard in the shoulder.
He was taken into custody alive.
Detective Torres walked out with bruises around her neck but no serious injuries.
The gasoline destroyed part of the flooring.
Smoke from the gunshots stained one wall.
The condo survived.
So did we.
Richard was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, arson, weapons offenses, fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice.
Vivian requested a private meeting with prosecutors.
She wanted protection from Richard.
The woman who had watched Adrian split a plate across my head now claimed she had spent her entire marriage afraid.
I believed she had been afraid.
I did not believe fear made her innocent.
Vivian admitted helping stage Elise’s crash.
She admitted cleaning blood from the terrace.
She admitted pressuring other women to sign away property.
But she claimed Adrian had not intended to kill Elise.
According to Vivian, Elise was alive after the impact.
Richard had checked her pulse and said she was dead.
Vivian believed him.
Then she revealed something no one expected.
“Richard lied.”
“Elise was breathing when they put her in the car.”
The room went silent.
The prosecutor leaned forward.
“Are you saying Elise survived the assault?”
May you like
Vivian nodded.
“She was alive when they drove her away.”
