Chapter 5 - THREE WOMEN

The first woman was named Rebecca Lang.
She married Richard Caldwell’s older brother in 1997.
Rebecca owned two apartment buildings in Sacramento.
Within eighteen months, both properties had been transferred to a Caldwell company.
Her family was told she had moved to Europe after the marriage failed.
No record showed her leaving the country.
Her body had never been found.
The second woman was Alicia Grant.
She married Adrian’s cousin, Thomas, in 2009.
Alicia inherited a chain of senior care facilities from her father.
She signed them away after what police reports described as a domestic disagreement.
Six weeks later, she drowned in a swimming pool at a Caldwell vacation home.
Her death was ruled accidental.
Every person at the property claimed they had been asleep.
The third woman was Elise Morgan.
Nolan had been at the estate on the night she died.
He had been twenty-four years old.
He told Detective Torres that Elise came into the dining room holding a folder of financial records.
She accused Richard of stealing millions from the Caldwell Foundation.
The foundation collected donations for women escaping domestic violence.
The cruelty was almost impossible to comprehend.
The Caldwells had built their public reputation by raising money for abused women.
Behind closed doors, they were abusing women and stealing their property.
Elise threatened to contact federal investigators.
Adrian dragged her outside.
Nolan heard her screaming on the terrace.
Then there was a heavy impact.
When Nolan reached the doors, Elise was lying motionless beside the stone steps.
Adrian stood above her.
Richard checked her pulse.
Vivian ordered everyone back inside.
“What happened next?” Detective Torres asked.
Nolan’s face collapsed.
“They carried her to the garage.”
“Who carried her?”
“Adrian and Richard.”
“Was she alive?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did anyone call an ambulance?”
“No.”
They placed Elise inside her car.
Richard followed in an SUV.
The next morning, the family announced that Elise had driven away drunk and gone over a cliff.
Nolan had never seen the crash site.
Richard told every witness what to say.
He threatened to cut them off financially.
He reminded them that they had all helped move Elise.
Silence became self-protection.
Then silence became habit.
I listened to the recorded interview from a private room inside the district attorney’s office.
Maya sat beside me.
She had been placed in a protected hotel under another name.
Caleb was sending messages to her mother, threatening to take the children she hoped to have someday.
They had no children.
The threat was meant to remind her that even her future belonged to him.
As Nolan finished his statement, Detective Torres entered the room.
“We searched the coordinates from the drive.”
“What coordinates?” I asked.
“A location behind the old Caldwell winery.”
Maya went pale.
“There’s an abandoned cellar there.”
Torres nodded.
“We found women’s clothing.”
“Identification cards.”
“Marriage certificates.”
“And human remains.”
Maya squeezed my hand.
“How many?”
The detective looked at us.
“We don’t know yet.”
Then she placed a photograph on the table.

A silver bracelet lay in the dirt beside the remains.
The name engraved into it was Rebecca.
