Chapter 20 - THE SECOND FLASH DRIVE

Three years passed.

The scar near my temple faded into a thin white line.

Adrian was sentenced to forty-eight years to life.

Richard received multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Pike died in prison before his second appeal.

Caleb received twenty-two years.

Thomas would never leave custody.

Vivian sent me one letter.

I returned it unopened.

The Elise Morgan Legal Fund expanded across California.

Maya became its director of financial investigations.

Serena trained advocates to recognize coercive property transfers.

Detective Torres joined a state task force focused on institutional corruption.

The condo remained mine.

Not because a court returned it.

Not because the Caldwell empire collapsed.

It remained mine because it had always been mine.

One evening, I stayed late at the Oakland reading room.

Rain struck softly against the windows.

The last staff member had gone home.

I was locking the file cabinets when someone knocked on the glass door.

A delivery driver stood outside holding a small package.

There was no return address.

The label contained only my name.

Inside was a wooden box.

A black flash drive rested at the center.

For a moment, I could not breathe.

It looked identical to the one Maya had pressed into my hand at the dinner.

Beneath it was a folded note.

You exposed the Caldwell family.

Now find out who taught them.

The note contained a date.

September 9, 1996.

And an address in New York City.

Maya returned to the reading room after I called her.

She examined the drive but did not touch it.

“Could Vivian have sent this?”

“She would have put her name on it.”

“Serena?”

“She says no.”

We contacted Detective Torres.

She arrived with a digital forensic specialist.

The drive contained one folder.

THE HALCYON GROUP.

Inside were photographs of Richard as a young attorney.

He stood beside judges, bankers, politicians, and executives.

Some of the names had appeared on Elise’s list.

Others had not.

The final image showed Richard seated at a long table.

Behind him hung a symbol formed from two silver keys crossing over a black circle.

Torres enlarged the photograph.

Eleven people sat at the table.

One was Warren Pike.

One was the judge who had removed himself from our case.

One was a woman I recognized from television.

She now served as the chief executive of one of the largest banks in the country.

The last file was an audio recording.

A man described a system for acquiring property through marriage, guardianship, debt, and intimidation.

Richard asked what happened if a target refused.

The man laughed.

“Then the family becomes the witness.”

The recording ended.

Maya looked at me.

“The Caldwells didn’t create this.”

“No.”

“They copied it.”

Outside, headlights appeared across the wet street.

A black sedan stopped in front of the shelter.

The rear door opened.

A woman stepped onto the sidewalk.

She wore a dark coat and carried a photograph against her chest.

Torres moved toward the entrance.

The woman raised both hands to show she was unarmed.

Then she looked directly through the glass at me.

Even from across the room, I recognized the crescent-shaped scar beside her eyebrow.

The same scar Elise Morgan had carried.

Maya whispered my name.

“That’s impossible.”

The woman knocked once.

Then she held the photograph against the glass.

It showed Elise standing beside a twin sister no file had ever mentioned.

On the back, four words had been written.

ELISE WAS NOT FIRST.

May you like

I unlocked the door.
