Chapter 9 - ELISE’S LETTER

The handwriting was uneven.

Several words had been crossed out and rewritten.

Elise had composed the letter under pressure, never knowing the name of the woman who might eventually read it.

To the woman Adrian marries after me.

He will tell you that I never existed.

If you learn my name, he will say I was unstable.

If you find proof of our marriage, he will say I betrayed him.

He will make you believe that everything violent he does is a reaction to something you caused.

It is not.

The violence is the plan.

The family begins with kindness.

Vivian becomes the mother you always wished you had.

Richard offers advice.

The relatives surround you until belonging feels like safety.

Then they study what you own.

They ask about accounts, inheritance, property, insurance, and debt.

They call it interest.

It is inventory.

When they decide what they want, Adrian becomes impatient.

He will ask once.

The family will ask together.

Then he will hurt you.

Elise’s final paragraph blurred in front of me.

I am sorry I could not stop them before they reached you.

But the fact that you are reading this means I did not disappear completely.

Do not negotiate.

Do not accept money.

Do not believe apologies delivered without witnesses.

And never stand near the terrace steps.

I folded the letter carefully.

The metal case also contained the original memory card from Elise’s private camera.

Most files were damaged.

Federal technicians recovered one video.

The recording began inside a guest bedroom at the Caldwell estate.

Elise placed the camera behind a row of books.

She expected a confrontation.

The time stamp showed June 14, 2018, at 8:32 p.m.

Richard entered first.

Adrian followed.

Vivian stood near the door.

Elise accused them of stealing foundation money and forging property transfers.

Richard told her to hand over every copy.

She refused.

Adrian grabbed her wrist.

She screamed.

Vivian closed the bedroom door.

The recording ended when Adrian pulled Elise out of the room.

There was no footage of the terrace.

But the audio continued for another eleven minutes.

Elise threatened to go to the FBI.

Richard threatened her father.

Adrian struck her.

Then came footsteps.

A door opened.

Wind moved across the microphone.

Elise said, “Don’t touch me.”

A metallic impact followed.

Then silence.

A man’s voice spoke next.

It was Adrian.

“Oh God.”

“What did I do?”

Richard answered.

“Stop panicking.”

“Go get her keys.”

Vivian began sobbing.

Richard told her to clean the blood from the railing.

The memory card ended there.

Federal agents arrested Vivian that evening.

She surrendered at her attorney’s office.

Richard disappeared thirty minutes before officers reached the estate.

His ankle monitor had not yet been ordered because he had not been formally charged.

His vehicle was found near a private hangar.

The family jet remained inside.

Richard had left by another route.

On the desk in his office, investigators found a printed map.

Two locations were circled.

May you like

Maya’s mother’s house.

And my condo.
