Chapter 3 - THE MAN IN THE HOSPITAL

Maya grabbed my arm.
Detective Torres stood so quickly that her chair struck the wall.
“Police.”
“Show me your hands.”
The shadow froze near the doorway.
A flashlight snapped on.
The beam revealed a middle-aged man wearing blue hospital scrubs and a maintenance badge.
He raised both hands.
“I’m here because the power failed.”
Detective Torres moved closer.
“Which department?”
“Facilities.”
She pulled the badge from his shirt.
The photograph did not match his face.
He turned toward the hallway.
Torres caught his sleeve.
The man shoved her into the doorframe and ran.
Maya screamed.
I reached for the secure laptop and pulled it against my chest.
The man sprinted past the nurses’ station.
Two hospital security officers chased him toward the emergency exit.
Detective Torres spoke rapidly into her radio.
Within minutes, police locked down the floor.
They found a maintenance cart abandoned near the stairwell.
Inside it were zip ties, a syringe, latex gloves, and a small electronic device designed to interrupt electrical circuits.
The man escaped through a loading entrance before officers reached the ground floor.
He had not come to repair the lights.
He had come for the drive.
Detective Torres returned to my room with a cut across her forehead.
“You were right not to trust them,” she said.
“Who knew we were here?”
“Every witness saw you leave in the ambulance.”
“But only officers knew Maya was coming.”
She looked at Maya.
“Did you tell anyone?”
“No.”
“Did your husband have access to your phone?”
Maya’s silence answered the question.
Torres asked her to hand it over.
A tracking application had been installed beneath the name of a weather service.
It had transmitted Maya’s location every thirty seconds.
Caleb had known exactly where she was.
The hospital restored power.
Detective Torres disconnected the secure computer from every network before reopening the drive.
The folders appeared again.
She clicked ELISE.
There were photographs.
Elise standing beside Adrian at a vineyard wedding.
Elise laughing near the pool at the Caldwell estate.
Elise holding a set of apartment keys.
Then the photographs changed.
Elise with bruises around her wrist.
Elise with a split lip.
Elise sitting inside a bathroom, whispering into a camera.
Adrian’s first wife had dark hair, gray eyes, and a small crescent-shaped scar beside her eyebrow.
She looked terrified.
The video timestamp showed May 29, 2018.
Elise glanced repeatedly toward the bathroom door.
“If anyone finds this, Adrian did not hurt me because he was angry.”
“He hurt me because I discovered what his family has been doing.”
“They choose women with property, businesses, inheritances, or access to money.”
“They call it marriage.”
“It is acquisition.”
My entire body went cold.
On the screen, Elise held up a document.
It was a quitclaim deed transferring her apartment building in Oakland to a Caldwell holding company.
Her signature had been forged.
She continued speaking.
“Richard prepares the papers.”
“Vivian creates pressure through the family.”
“Adrian becomes violent when the woman refuses.”
“The others provide witnesses.”
“They all know.”
Maya covered her mouth.
Elise’s voice cracked.
“I found seven women.”
“Some divorced them.”
“Some disappeared.”
“One died.”
The video ended.
Detective Torres opened the PROPERTY folder.
A list of addresses appeared.
My Mission Bay condo was at the top.
Beside it were scanned copies of my mortgage, property tax records, signature samples, and a completed deed.
The deed transferred ownership of my condo to Caldwell Family Residential Holdings.
At the bottom was my signature.
A perfect forgery.
The document was dated three days earlier.
They had not invited me to dinner to convince me to surrender my condo.
They had already prepared to steal it.
My refusal had only forced Adrian to reveal the violence behind the plan.
Torres opened another file.
It was an email written by Richard.

The message contained a single sentence.
If she refuses at dinner, Adrian will handle her the way he handled Elise.
