Chapter 1 - THE PLATE

The plate hit Claire Bennett before anyone at the table decided to become a witness.

Porcelain burst against her temple. Sauce splashed across the white linen. A thin red line slipped through her hair and ran down the collar of her blouse.

Twenty members of the Caldwell family sat beneath the iron chandelier inside the Napa Valley estate.

Not one of them moved.

Adrian Caldwell stood over his wife with his fist still closed around a broken piece of china.

“You embarrassed me,” he said.

Claire pressed two fingers to the side of her head. When she pulled them away, they were wet with blood.

Across the table, Eleanor Caldwell—the woman who had just announced she would be taking Claire’s Mission Bay condo—slowly turned her wineglass by the stem.

“It got out of hand,” Eleanor said. “There’s no reason to make this ugly.”

Claire looked from face to face. Her father-in-law stared at his plate. Adrian’s uncles studied the walls. Two cousins quietly led their children into the hall.

They were not shocked.

They were waiting to see whether the blow had worked.

Claire reached into her purse.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Give me the phone.”

She dialed 911.

“My husband struck me in the head with a plate,” she said when the dispatcher answered. “I am bleeding. There are twenty adult witnesses, and I believe they are going to lie for him.”

Chairs scraped back.

Eleanor lunged for the phone. Claire stepped away.

Then Maya, Adrian’s sister-in-law, rose and moved between them.

“Don’t touch her,” Maya said.

Her voice shook, but she did not move.

Adrian stared at her. “You need to sit down.”

“No.”

Sirens began to rise beyond the vineyard gates.

For the first time all evening, fear crossed Eleanor’s face.

But Claire noticed something else.

Maya was not looking at Adrian.

She was staring at the locked study door behind him.
