Chapter 7 - THE EXPLOSION
The blast came from the parking garage.
The floor shook. Ceiling panels fell. Smoke rolled up the stairwell as hospital staff rushed patients away from the windows.
Lucas smiled.
“The evidence vehicle,” he said. “Gone.”
Officer Ramirez slammed him against the wall and cuffed him.
But the SUV was not the only target.
Naomi’s investigator had placed the recovered flash drive inside a fireproof evidence bag in the vehicle.
For several terrible minutes, Claire believed everything had been destroyed.
Then Naomi lifted her phone.
“I cloned it last night.”
Lucas’s smile vanished.
The encrypted files revealed more than forged deeds. They contained bribes to county officials, secret payments to judges, and a ledger of women who had been pressured into surrendering property.
At the bottom was a folder marked D.C. — PRIVATE.
Daniel Caldwell was Adrian’s uncle, Charles’s younger brother, and the original founder of the family’s development company. He had died in a boating accident fifteen years earlier.
The folder contained an audio file recorded the night he died.
Charles’s voice said, “Sign the shares over, or you will not leave this marina.”
Daniel refused.
A struggle followed.
Then a splash.
The recording ended.
Maya sank into a chair.
“The family empire was built on his shares,” she whispered.
Rebecca looked at Claire. “That is why they all protect Charles. If the death is investigated, every trust, every property, every inheritance can be challenged.”
Claire finally understood the silence at dinner.
They were not merely protecting Adrian from an assault charge.
They were protecting a fortune born from murder.
Naomi copied the file to three secure servers.
Before she could send it to federal investigators, every phone in the room received the same message.
A photograph of Maya’s eight-year-old daughter appeared on-screen.
She was sitting alone in the back seat of a car.
