Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE WAS ALREADY MORTGAGED

At the hospital, Claire received seven stitches and a concussion diagnosis.
She should have been resting.
Instead, she sat beneath fluorescent lights with her laptop open, tracing a loan she had never requested.
The lender listed Caldwell Heritage Holdings as co-borrower. The application included tax returns, employment records, and a scanned copy of her driver’s license.
Someone had built a complete financial version of her life.
And that version had agreed to everything.
Her attorney, Naomi Price, arrived just after midnight.
Naomi read the documents in silence, then looked at Claire. “This is not a family dispute. This is organized fraud.”
Maya sat near the door, twisting her wedding ring.
“They’ve done it before,” she said.
Lucas had followed her to the hospital but remained in the hallway.
Naomi turned. “To whom?”
Maya swallowed. “To women who married into the family.”
She explained that Charles controlled a private network of accountants, notaries, and estate managers. Whenever a son married someone with property or money, the family slowly blurred ownership. Joint accounts appeared. Powers of attorney were slipped into insurance packets. Signatures were copied.
“Most women didn’t fight,” Maya said. “They were paid to leave. Or scared.”
Claire thought of Adrian’s first wife, whose name was never mentioned.
“What happened to Rebecca?” she asked.
Maya’s eyes filled.
“She disappeared three weeks after she accused Adrian of hitting her.”
The room became still.
“Disappeared?” Naomi asked.
“The family said she moved to Europe.”
“Did you believe them?”
“No.”
Naomi plugged the recovered flash drive into an isolated laptop.
The screen filled with encrypted folders. Most were labeled by initials.
One folder read C.B.
Another read R.M.

Inside the second folder was a photograph of Adrian’s former wife standing beside Claire’s condo building.
The timestamp was from six days earlier.
