Charles pressed the switch.
Nothing happened.
Naomi’s investigator had disabled the charges beneath the vineyard twenty minutes earlier after tracking the duplicate drive.
Charles pressed the button again.
Officer Ramirez took him to the ground.
By midnight, federal agents had sealed the estate. They cataloged the hidden vault and recovered decades of forged documents, blackmail files, and stolen property.
Eleanor survived surgery. Adrian and Lucas were held without bail. Charles faced kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, attempted murder, and a reopened homicide investigation.
The story exploded across national news.
But the Caldwells still had lawyers, money, and allies.
Within forty-eight hours, witnesses began changing their statements.
Three relatives claimed Claire had attacked Adrian first.
A former employee accused Maya of stealing from the family.
Anonymous accounts flooded social media with stories calling Rebecca unstable.
Then Claire’s employer placed her on administrative leave, citing “public controversy.”
The pressure was working exactly as the Caldwells had planned.
Naomi spread new documents across a conference table.
“They are trying to starve you before trial,” she said. “No job. Frozen accounts. Legal costs. Public shame.”
Claire looked through the windows toward Mission Bay.
Her condo building stood in the distance, small and stubborn among cranes and towers.
“I spent twelve years earning that home,” she said. “I can spend one more year defending it.”
Rebecca handed her an envelope.
“I came to your building to leave this before Adrian found me.”
