Chapter 16 - THE HEARING

The temporary family hearing occurred nine days after my return.

Beatriz arrived wearing a conservative navy suit.

She looked composed.

Her attorney described her as a devoted stepmother caught in a misunderstanding.

My attorney did not argue emotionally.

Elena presented a timeline.

Staff dismissals.

Blocked communications.

Disabled cameras.

Security footage.

The chore schedules.

The recorded terrace conversation.

The notebook.

The financial documents.

The forged signature samples.

The emails with Lucas.

Each piece alone could be explained.

Together, they told one story.

Control.

Isolation.

Fear.

Beatriz’s attorney argued that the financial issues were unrelated to Isabella.

Elena disagreed.

She showed the message.

Then make calling him feel dangerous.

The room went silent.

Beatriz stared straight ahead.

Isabella did not appear in open court.

I had insisted on that.

She spoke separately through the proper child-protection process with trained professionals.

She would not be turned into a weapon between adults.

When the hearing ended, temporary orders were issued keeping Beatriz away from Isabella while the investigation continued.

I expected relief.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

Outside the courthouse, Beatriz approached me before security could intervene.

“You won.”

I looked at her.

“This isn’t a game.”

“You took everything.”

“No.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You took the house.”

“It wasn’t yours.”

“The money.”

“You tried to steal it.”

“My marriage.”

“You destroyed it.”

Her eyes hardened.

“And Isabella?”

I stepped closer.

“Do not say her name like she was property we were fighting over.”

Beatriz looked away.

Then she whispered.

“Lucas is going to ruin you.”

“Maybe he’ll try.”

“He has documents.”

“So do I.”

She studied my face.

For the first time, she seemed to understand I wasn’t afraid of the business scandal.

I had spent twenty years rebuilding companies after disasters.

Money could be recovered.

Reputations could be defended.

What terrified me had been losing my daughter while living under the same roof.

That danger was over.

As I walked away, my phone rang.

It was my chief financial officer.

“We found Lucas.”

“Where?”

“Airport.”

“Leaving?”

“No.”

There was a pause.

“He was meeting someone from your Dubai project.”
