Chapter 18 - THE OFFER I REFUSED

Beatriz’s proposal was simple.

She would cooperate fully in the financial investigation.

She would identify every account.

Every password.

Every document shared with Lucas.

In exchange, she wanted me to soften my position in the family case.

She wanted supervised access to Isabella eventually.

Elena finished explaining.

I answered immediately.

“No.”

“She may have useful evidence.”

“Then prosecutors and investigators can negotiate whatever is appropriate regarding the financial case.”

Elena nodded.

“But you won’t bargain Isabella.”

“Never.”

That evening, Beatriz requested one final private conversation.

I agreed only with attorneys present.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Not physically.

Some people seem smaller once their power disappears.

“I was angry,” she said.

I remained silent.

“I resented how much you loved her.”

Elena shifted slightly.

Beatriz continued.

“Every room had photographs of her mother.”

“They were Isabella’s photographs.”

“I know.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“You know now.”

She lowered her eyes.

“I thought if Isabella depended on me, she would eventually choose me.”

“So you made her afraid.”

“I thought discipline would create respect.”

“You wanted obedience.”

She didn’t argue.

After a moment, she whispered.

“I never thought you would see the garden.”

“That was the problem.”

She looked at me.

“What?”

“You behaved differently when you believed nobody important was watching.”

Her face changed.

I continued.

“Rosa was watching.”

“Isabella was watching.”

“The staff was watching.”

“You just decided none of them mattered.”

Beatriz began crying.

I felt no triumph.

Only sadness.

She had mistaken status for importance.

That mistake had revealed exactly who she was.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I stood.

“Tell Isabella that only if the professionals decide hearing it would help her.”

Beatriz looked shocked.

“You won’t give her my apology?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because your apology is about what you need.”

May you like

I walked toward the door.

“My daughter has spent enough time carrying things that belonged to adults.”
