Chapter 12: The Trial Begins

Chapter 12: The Trial Begins

The first television cameras arrived before sunrise.

By eight o'clock, every major news network had parked satellite trucks outside the Denver Federal Courthouse.

Reporters crowded the entrance.

Microphones stretched over barricades.

The story had become national news.

A decorated federal agent had returned from a classified mission to find her five-year-old daughter abused, her marriage destroyed, and a conspiracy reaching into the highest levels of government.

No one wanted to miss what happened next.

A Mother Before an Agent

Evelyn stood in front of the courthouse mirror, adjusting the collar of a navy-blue suit.

She barely recognized herself.

The tactical gear was gone.

The body armor.

The holster.

Today she wasn't arriving as Special Agent Evelyn Carlisle.

She was arriving as Lily's mother.

A soft knock came at the door.

Lily peeked inside, holding Mr. Buttons tightly.

"You look pretty."

Evelyn smiled.

"So do you."

Lily wore a pale yellow dress—the same one she had begged to wear on her birthday before everything fell apart.

Henry had found an identical dress and surprised her the night before.

For the first time in weeks, Lily twirled.

The smile lasted only a few seconds, but it was enough.

"You don't have to come today," Evelyn said gently.

Lily shook her head.

"I want the judge to know I'm not scared anymore."

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"You already make me the bravest person in the room."

Inside Courtroom One

Judge Amelia Hart entered promptly at nine.

"All rise."

The courtroom stood.

Grant Carlisle sat at the defense table in a gray suit, his wrists free but his ankles still restrained beneath the table.

He looked thinner.

Older.

He avoided looking toward Evelyn.

Vanessa sat beside the prosecution.

She had accepted a cooperation agreement but had not yet received any promises regarding sentencing.

Across the aisle, Director Donovan and Agent Brooks occupied the front row.

Behind them sat Henry, Tom Bennett, Diane Mercer, and Margaret Wilson.

The gallery overflowed with reporters.

Judge Hart looked around the packed courtroom.

"This proceeding concerns charges of child abuse, child neglect, fraud, forgery, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy."

She paused.

"The court reminds everyone that this is not entertainment."

Every camera immediately lowered.

Opening Statements

Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca Sloan stood first.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this case is not simply about broken vows."

She looked toward Grant.

"It is about a father who chose greed over his child."

She walked slowly before the jury.

"The evidence will show that while Agent Evelyn Carlisle risked her life serving her country..."

She pointed toward Lily.

"...her five-year-old daughter was starved, humiliated, isolated, and emotionally tortured inside her own home."

The courtroom remained silent.

Sloan continued.

"You will also see overwhelming evidence that these crimes were committed to seize control of property and wealth that never legally belonged to the defendant."

She returned to her seat.

Grant's attorney, Martin Ellis, rose calmly.

"My client made serious mistakes."

Evelyn noticed Grant look up for the first time.

"But mistakes do not equal monsters."

Ellis paced before the jury.

"You will hear testimony from people motivated by anger, regret, and political pressure."

He glanced toward Vanessa.

"Some witnesses hope to save themselves."

Then toward Evelyn.

"Others believe they have already judged the outcome."

He stopped.

"We ask only one thing."

"Listen to every fact before deciding a man's future."

Vanessa Takes the Stand

The courtroom doors closed.

Vanessa walked slowly to the witness stand.

She looked exhausted.

Nothing remained of the glamorous woman Evelyn had found on her sofa.

After taking the oath, Sloan approached.

"Ms. Vale..."

"When did your relationship with Grant Carlisle begin?"

Vanessa looked down.

"Almost two years ago."

A murmur swept through the courtroom.

"So while he was still happily married?"

"Yes."

"Did he tell you his wife planned to abandon the family?"

"No."

"He told me she already had."

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"I believed him."

Sloan displayed one of Grant's text messages on the courtroom screen.

Once she leaves on her next assignment, everything changes.

"Is this message authentic?"

"Yes."

"What did he mean?"

Vanessa swallowed hard.

"He wanted me to move into the house while Agent Carlisle was gone."

Another message appeared.

The kid will eventually call you Mom.

Vanessa began crying.

"I thought he meant... eventually."

She looked toward Lily.

"I didn't know..."

Her voice broke completely.

"...I didn't know he planned to destroy her."

Cross-Examination

Defense attorney Ellis approached.

"Ms. Vale."

"You abused Lily, didn't you?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Yes."

"So you're a criminal."

"Yes."

"And today you're blaming Mr. Carlisle to reduce your own punishment."

Vanessa looked directly at him.

"No."

"Then why testify?"

She turned toward Evelyn.

Then toward Lily.

Finally she answered.

"Because every night..."

"...I hear that little girl crying."

The courtroom fell silent.

"I can't undo what I did."

She wiped away tears.

"But I can stop lying."

Ellis had no further questions.

A Father's Collapse

During a recess, Grant sat alone at the defense table.

For the first time, he looked toward Lily.

She instinctively moved closer to Evelyn.

Grant lowered his head.

The gesture hurt more than any sentence.

He realized his daughter no longer looked at him with love.

She looked at him with fear.

Breaking News

Outside the courthouse, reporters interrupted live broadcasts.

Federal agents had surrounded a private airfield outside Denver.

A Gulfstream jet registered to a shell corporation linked to Richard Hale had just landed.

Inside the hangar...

Agents found the aircraft.

The crew.

The luggage.

But one passenger was missing.

Victor Kane had disappeared again.

Director Donovan received the update on her phone.

She quietly leaned toward Brooks.

"He slipped through."

Brooks frowned.

"He won't leave Colorado."

"How do you know?"

Brooks looked through the courtroom window.

"Because the only evidence that can destroy him..."

He glanced toward Lily holding Mr. Buttons.

"...is sitting inside this courthouse."

At that exact moment, a courthouse security officer hurried into the courtroom.

He whispered urgently into the judge's ear.

Judge Hart's expression changed immediately.

She struck the gavel once.

"This court is in recess."

The room buzzed with confusion.

Outside...

A suspicious package had just been discovered beneath the courthouse steps.

And no one knew whether it was a bomb...

May you like

Or a distraction.
