Chapter 13: The Trap Beneath the Courthouse

Chapter 13: The Trap Beneath the Courthouse

The courtroom emptied in seconds.

"Everyone remain calm," Judge Amelia Hart instructed. "Follow the marshals' directions."

Calm was the one thing no one felt.

Federal marshals guided jurors through a secured hallway while local police began clearing the courthouse floor by floor.

Evelyn instinctively picked Lily up.

Her daughter wrapped both arms around her neck.

"Mommy..."

"I'm here."

"Are we in trouble?"

Evelyn kissed her forehead.

"Not if I can help it."

A Suspicious Package

Outside, the courthouse plaza had become chaos.

Police pushed reporters behind barricades.

Bomb technicians approached a black backpack sitting beneath a marble bench near the courthouse entrance.

Director Donovan watched through binoculars.

"No wires."

"No visible trigger."

The bomb technician carefully unzipped the bag.

Inside...

Nothing explosive.

Only a cheap prepaid cell phone.

And a single folded envelope.

The front read:

FOR AGENT EVELYN CARLISLE

Officer Ramirez carefully handed it to her.

Inside was one typed sentence.

You're protecting the wrong witness.

No signature.

No fingerprints.

No return address.

Brooks frowned.

"That's not a threat."

"It's a message."

Evelyn read it again.

"Wrong witness..."

She looked toward Lily.

Then toward Vanessa.

Then toward Grant.

Someone wanted her to question everything she believed.

The Missing Prisoner

Before anyone could discuss the letter further, Brooks's secure phone rang.

He answered.

His expression darkened.

"What happened?"

The answer left the room silent.

Michael Voss...

The former federal instructor captured at the Carlisle house...

Was gone.

Officer Ramirez stared.

"Gone?"

"The prison transport vehicle was attacked."

"Dead?"

Brooks shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Donovan.

"They freed him."

Three correctional officers had been injured.

One remained in critical condition.

The attackers had known the exact route.

The exact time.

The exact vehicle.

Someone was feeding information to Victor Kane.

Grant Makes a Request

Court remained suspended while the courthouse was searched.

Grant sat alone in a holding room guarded by two U.S. Marshals.

Unexpectedly, he asked to speak with Evelyn.

Brooks immediately objected.

"Absolutely not."

But Judge Hart approved the meeting under supervision.

Ten minutes later, Evelyn entered the interview room.

Grant looked exhausted.

His hair had turned noticeably grayer in just a few days.

He didn't ask for forgiveness.

He didn't apologize.

Instead, he said quietly,

"The letter was right."

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"What letter?"

"You're protecting the wrong witness."

She said nothing.

Grant leaned forward.

"You think Victor wants Lily."

"He does."

"No."

Grant shook his head.

"Lily isn't the target."

Evelyn's heartbeat quickened.

"Then who is?"

Grant looked directly into her eyes.

"You."

Silence.

"He doesn't care about me anymore."

"He doesn't care about Vanessa."

"He doesn't even care about the ledger."

Evelyn frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Grant swallowed.

"You're the only federal agent who's ever connected him to Richard Hale."

"If you testify..."

He lowered his head.

"...everything ends."

The Real Plan

Grant took a long breath.

"I've lied to you for years."

"That's true."

"But I'm not lying now."

He looked toward the security camera in the corner.

"Victor doesn't destroy evidence first."

"He destroys witnesses."

Evelyn remembered Walter's recording.

"Protect Lily before you protect anything else."

At the time she believed Walter meant Lily was the target.

Now she wondered...

Had Walter been warning her that Lily would be used to get to Evelyn?

A Message From Lily

As Evelyn left the holding room, she found Lily sitting beside Henry in the courthouse family room.

The little girl held a fresh drawing.

"Mommy."

"What did you draw?"

Lily handed her the picture.

It showed three people.

Lily.

Evelyn.

Walter.

Above them, a large black bird circled in the sky.

On the back of the drawing Lily had written, in careful uneven letters:

Grandpa said eagles can't fly in storms forever.

Henry stared.

"I've never heard her say that."

Evelyn looked at the sentence again.

Walter must have told Lily those words years ago.

At the time they meant nothing.

Today...

They sounded like a promise.

The Hidden Audio

Back at FBI headquarters, technicians continued restoring files from Walter's flash drive.

One corrupted recording suddenly became readable.

Walter's voice emerged through static.

"If Victor ever learns the ledger still exists..."

Static.

"...he'll come after Evelyn."

Another burst of interference.

"...because she's the only one stubborn enough to finish what I started."

The recording ended.

Brooks looked at Donovan.

"Grant was telling the truth."

Donovan nodded.

"Which means Victor has changed priorities."

An Unexpected Visitor

As court prepared to resume, a federal marshal approached Donovan.

"Director."

"What is it?"

"A woman insists she has information about Victor Kane."

"Name?"

"Emily Cross."

Brooks frowned.

"Cross?"

The marshal nodded.

"She says she's Officer Daniel Cross's widow."

Everyone exchanged puzzled looks.

"There was no Officer Daniel Cross."

"Exactly."

The marshal hesitated.

"She says..."

"...that wasn't his real name."

The Photograph

Emily Cross entered carrying a worn photo album.

She was in her early sixties.

Her hands trembled.

"My husband wasn't a corrections officer."

She placed an old photograph on the table.

The picture showed a much younger man.

The same face seen in the fake jail uniform.

"My husband's real name was..."

She swallowed.

"...David Kane."

Brooks froze.

"Kane?"

Emily nodded.

"Victor Kane's younger brother."

Silence spread through the room.

"He spent twenty-five years hiding from Victor."

She opened the album to another photograph.

Victor stood beside David.

And beside them...

A third man.

Young.

Smiling.

No beard.

No gray hair.

But unmistakable.

Grant Carlisle.

Evelyn stared at the picture.

The date printed on the bottom read:

Twenty years ago.

Long before she had ever met Grant.

Long before Walter had begun writing his journal.

Which meant one horrifying truth became impossible to ignore.

Grant hadn't met Victor Kane through Vanessa.

Or through greed.

He had known Victor...

May you like

Almost his entire adult life.
