Chapter 6: The Cabin No One Was Meant to Find

Chapter 6: The Cabin No One Was Meant to Find

Grant stopped struggling the instant he saw the gold key in Lily's hand.

The color drained from his face.

"No..." he whispered.

Officer Ramirez paused before helping him into the patrol car.

"What is it?"

Grant didn't answer.

His eyes never left the key.

Henry Carlisle watched his nephew carefully.

"I've never seen him frightened before," he said quietly. "Until now."

The patrol car door slammed shut.

As it pulled away, Grant twisted in his seat and shouted through the half-open window.

"Don't go there!"

It was the first honest thing he had said all day.

Walter's Last Request

Inside the house, Henry sat with Evelyn in Walter's old study while Lily slept upstairs, exhausted, curled against Sunny the stuffed puppy.

Henry placed an aged envelope on the desk.

Walter's handwriting covered the front.

Only open after Grant is gone.

Evelyn carefully unfolded the letter.

Evelyn,

If Henry has given Lily the gold key, then my greatest fear has come true.

The key opens a cabin in the San Juan Mountains. It has belonged to our family for generations.

No bank knows about it.

No lawyer listed it in my estate.

I kept it hidden because some things are worth more than money.

Inside, you will find the truth I could never prove while I was alive.

Trust no one except Henry.

Protect Lily.

—Walter

Evelyn looked up.

"What truth?"

Henry sighed.

"I never asked."

A Phone Call From the District Attorney

Agent Brooks stepped into the room.

"The District Attorney just called."

"What did they say?"

"They've approved emergency criminal charges."

He handed Evelyn his phone.

The prosecutor spoke immediately.

"Agent Carlisle, we're requesting no bail."

"For child abuse?"

"For much more than that."

Evelyn frowned.

"What else?"

"We've begun reviewing Grant's financial records."

A pause.

"They don't make sense."

Millions Missing

Federal forensic accountants had already started tracing transactions.

One investigator appeared on a video conference.

"Agent Carlisle."

"What did you find?"

He shared his screen.

A web of bank transfers filled the monitor.

"Over the last eighteen months..."

he said,

"...more than twelve million dollars moved through shell companies."

Evelyn stared.

"Twelve million?"

"We've only traced part of it."

Another chart appeared.

"The money originated from businesses legally owned by you."

Henry slowly removed his glasses.

"So he was stealing from her."

The accountant nodded.

"And hiding it."

Vanessa Decides to Talk

Across town, Vanessa sat alone in an interview room.

Her mascara had long since run.

Detective Collins entered carrying a recorder.

"Ready?"

Vanessa nodded.

"I want immunity."

"You don't get to demand that."

She looked down.

"I'll tell you everything anyway."

The recorder began.

"When did your relationship with Grant start?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"Almost two years ago."

The detective stopped writing.

"Two years?"

"Yes."

"Evelyn wasn't on assignment then."

"I know."

"So the affair began while they were happily married."

Vanessa nodded.

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

"He told me Evelyn cared more about guns than family."

She laughed bitterly.

"I believed him."

The Secret Messages

Vanessa unlocked another cloud account investigators hadn't seen before.

Thousands of deleted messages appeared.

One text, sent six months earlier, made Detective Collins stop cold.

Once she leaves on the next federal assignment, everything starts. The kid will eventually accept you as her new mom.

Another message from Grant read:

Dad won't give me control, so I'll make sure he doesn't have a choice.

Detective Collins looked up.

"What happened after that message?"

Vanessa whispered,

"Walter had his stroke three weeks later."

Silence.

"You think Grant caused it?"

"I don't know."

"But they had the worst argument I'd ever heard."

Lily Wakes Up

Back at the house, Lily slowly opened her eyes.

For the first time in weeks...

She woke without screaming.

She found Evelyn asleep beside her bed, still wearing her tactical jacket.

Carefully, Lily reached over and touched her mother's hand.

Evelyn woke instantly.

"Hey, birthday girl."

Lily smiled.

A tiny one.

"I'm hungry."

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

It was such a simple sentence.

Yet it meant Lily finally felt safe enough to ask.

"What sounds good?"

"Pancakes."

Henry laughed from the doorway.

"I believe I can handle that."

Within an hour, the kitchen smelled of butter and maple syrup.

Lily sat at the table.

At the table.

Not beneath it.

Henry placed a stack of chocolate-chip pancakes in front of her.

Lily stared.

"For me?"

"Every single one."

She looked toward Evelyn.

"Am I allowed?"

Evelyn reached across the table and squeezed her hand.

"In this family..."

she said softly,

"...you never have to ask permission to eat."

Lily took her first bite.

Then another.

Soon she was smiling through a mouthful of pancakes.

For the first time since Evelyn returned...

The house sounded like a home again.

The Call From the Jail

Late that evening, Evelyn's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed:

Denver County Jail.

She answered.

Grant's voice came through.

"They're keeping me in isolation."

"You earned it."

"Evelyn... please listen."

"I'm listening."

"The cabin..."

His breathing quickened.

"Don't take Lily there."

"Why?"

Long silence.

Finally—

"Because someone else knows where it is."

The line went dead.

Evelyn stared at the phone.

Agent Brooks had already begun tracing the disconnected call.

Five minutes later, he looked up.

"That wasn't the strange part."

"What was?"

Brooks replayed the jail recording.

Just before the line disconnected...

Another voice could be heard in the background.

A man's voice.

Barely audible.

Three words.

"She's too late."

Brooks looked at Evelyn.

"Grant wasn't alone."

Evelyn felt a chill run down her spine.

Someone else had been listening.

Someone who knew about the cabin.

And if Grant was telling the truth...

May you like

That person was already on the way there.
