Chapter 2: The House of Lies

Chapter 2: The House of Lies

The knock came again.

Three sharp, deliberate raps.

"Federal Protective Service. Open the door."

Grant's face lost every trace of confidence.

Vanessa looked from the door to Evelyn, suddenly unsure whether the woman standing before her was truly just an abandoned wife.

Evelyn adjusted Lily on her hip and spoke softly.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

Lily's tiny arms remained locked around her mother's neck.

"I don't want them to make you leave again."

"I'm not going anywhere."

Those five words carried a promise Evelyn intended to keep.

She walked to the front door and opened it.

Six people stood outside.

Two Denver police officers.

A Child Protective Services investigator.

A forensic photographer.

And two federal agents in dark jackets.

The older federal agent nodded respectfully.

"Special Agent Carlisle."

"Agent Brooks."

He glanced past her into the house.

"I came as soon as your emergency code reached headquarters."

Grant stepped forward quickly, forcing a smile.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

Officer Ramirez raised a hand.

"Sir, please remain where you are."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"This is ridiculous. She's overreacting because she found out Grant moved on."

No one answered her.

The CPS investigator, a woman in her fifties named Diane Mercer, immediately focused on Lily.

Her experienced eyes noticed everything.

The bruises.

The dirty pajamas.

The scratches on her bare feet.

The way the little girl flinched whenever Grant spoke.

She knelt several feet away.

"Hi, sweetheart."

Lily hid her face.

"You don't have to talk," Diane said gently. "Can I look at your hands?"

Slowly, Lily extended them.

Purple marks circled both wrists.

Diane's expression changed instantly.

She stood.

"When did these injuries occur?"

Grant answered before anyone else could.

"She bruises easily."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You've never once noticed she bruises easily."

Grant swallowed.

"I mean..."

"You mean you're lying."

Officer Ramirez took out his notebook.

"Mr. Carlisle, we'll be asking the questions."

The First Crack

The forensic photographer quietly began documenting the room.

Every photograph told a story.

The overturned bucket beside the marble floor.

The cleaning rag.

The champagne glass.

The expensive heel that had rested on Lily's hand only minutes earlier.

Then he photographed Lily's injuries.

Vanessa scoffed.

"Kids fall."

Diane looked directly at her.

"Kids don't usually have bruises in different stages of healing."

Silence.

Grant shifted uncomfortably.

"She's clumsy."

Evelyn spoke without emotion.

"My daughter took gymnastics for two years."

Grant looked at her.

"She almost never fell."

The Bedroom

Diane asked quietly,

"May I see Lily's room?"

Grant hesitated.

"It's messy."

"I've seen messy."

Evelyn followed as they walked upstairs.

The moment Diane opened the bedroom door...

She stopped.

The room wasn't messy.

It was empty.

The princess bed Evelyn had built with Grant before Lily was born was gone.

The bookshelves were gone.

The stuffed animals had disappeared.

Only a thin camping mattress remained on the hardwood floor.

A faded blanket lay folded beside it.

Lily buried her face deeper into Evelyn's shoulder.

"I was bad."

Evelyn froze.

"What did you say?"

"I lost my room."

Her tiny voice trembled.

"They said princesses have beds..."

She looked toward Vanessa downstairs.

"...bad girls don't."

Diane slowly turned toward Grant.

"Where is this child's furniture?"

Grant hesitated.

"We... donated it."

Evelyn stared.

"You donated everything she owned?"

Vanessa shouted from downstairs.

"It wasn't using the space anyway!"

The Closet

Evelyn opened Lily's closet.

It contained six gray T-shirts.

Three pairs of sweatpants.

One winter coat.

Nothing pink.

Nothing colorful.

Nothing that belonged to the little girl who loved butterflies and rainbows.

"Where are her dresses?"

Grant remained silent.

"Lily?" Evelyn whispered.

Her daughter answered quietly.

"Miss Vanessa said..."

She struggled to finish.

"...pretty clothes are for children people love."

Even the police officers looked away.

The Hidden Drawer

While investigators continued photographing the bedroom, Evelyn noticed something odd.

Lily's old dresser remained.

One drawer wouldn't close completely.

She pulled it open.

Empty.

Then she noticed the false bottom.

Years ago, Grant had built a secret compartment so Lily could hide birthday presents.

Evelyn lifted the wooden panel.

Inside sat a small pink notebook.

And a broken crayon.

"Lily..."

The little girl nodded.

"My secret book."

Evelyn opened it carefully.

Every page held a child's drawing.

The first showed Mommy, Daddy, and Lily holding hands beneath a smiling sun.

The second showed only Mommy and Lily.

The third showed Vanessa standing between Mommy and Daddy.

Then the drawings changed.

One picture showed Lily sleeping on the floor.

Another showed herself inside a tiny square under a sink.

One drawing showed a woman with long yellow hair stepping on a small hand.

The last page nearly broke Evelyn.

In shaky letters that a five-year-old had struggled to write:

MOMMY PLEASE COME HOME.

There were dozens of tiny hearts surrounding the sentence.

Some were blurred where tears had fallen onto the paper.

Evelyn closed the notebook before anyone could see the tears in her own eyes.

The Security System

Agent Brooks stepped into the upstairs hallway.

"Evelyn."

She looked up.

"The home's security server has been wiped."

Grant stiffened.

"What?"

"The cameras."

Brooks held up a tablet.

"Someone deleted every recording from the last six weeks."

Officer Ramirez looked at Grant.

"Who has administrator access?"

Grant answered too quickly.

"I do."

"And?"

"...Vanessa."

Brooks nodded slowly.

"As I thought."

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"So what? Cameras get deleted."

Brooks smiled.

"They do."

He paused.

"But federal evidence backups don't."

Everyone looked at him.

"When Agent Carlisle accepted her assignment, headquarters automatically mirrored this home's security footage onto an encrypted remote server."

Grant's knees nearly buckled.

Evelyn hadn't known.

The protocol had been updated while she was away.

Brooks looked directly at him.

"Nothing was actually deleted."

Vanessa whispered,

"Oh my God..."

Brooks tapped his tablet.

"The last six weeks are still there."

Grant's breathing became uneven.

He remembered every slap.

Every punishment.

Every argument.

Every lie.

If the cameras had captured even half of it...

Everything was over.

The Birthday Gift

As officers escorted Grant and Vanessa downstairs for separate interviews, Evelyn remained in Lily's room.

She finally remembered the wrapped package still inside her duffel bag.

She pulled it out carefully.

Pink paper.

Yellow ribbon.

Lily stared.

"For me?"

Evelyn smiled for the first time that morning.

"For my favorite birthday girl."

Tiny fingers slowly unwrapped the package.

Inside sat the stuffed golden retriever Lily had begged for before Evelyn left.

For a moment...

The frightened little girl disappeared.

A smile—small, uncertain, but real—spread across her face.

She hugged the toy tightly.

"I'm going to call him Sunny."

Evelyn kissed her forehead.

"I think he'd like that."

Downstairs, an officer suddenly called out.

"Agent Carlisle!"

She hurried toward the staircase.

Officer Ramirez stood in the study holding several documents.

"You're going to want to see this."

He handed her a folder taken from Grant's desk.

Across the top page, in bold letters, were the words:

PETITION FOR DECLARATION OF PRESUMED DEATH

Applicant:

Grant Michael Carlisle

Spouse:

Evelyn Grace Carlisle

Date Filed:

Three weeks ago.

Evelyn's heart stopped.

She hadn't even been missing two months.

Grant hadn't just replaced her.

He had already begun trying to erase her from existence.

And underneath the petition...

Was a second document.

A draft of Evelyn's will.

One she had never written.

One leaving everything...

May you like

To Grant.
