Chapter 14

Chapter 14: The Truth Grant Could No Longer Hide
The photograph sat in the center of the conference table.
No one spoke.
Grant Carlisle.
Twenty years younger.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with Victor Kane and David Kane.
The timestamp in the corner read:
July 18, 2006.
Four years before Grant had even met Evelyn.
Brooks broke the silence.
"So it wasn't a coincidence."
Director Donovan nodded slowly.
"No."
She looked toward the holding room where Grant was being guarded.
"He lied about when this started."
The Second Interrogation
Grant was brought back into the interview room.
This time, the photograph was waiting for him.
Evelyn placed it on the table without saying a word.
Grant looked down.
The color drained from his face.
"I wondered if this still existed."
"You knew it did," Evelyn replied.
He closed his eyes.
For a long moment, no one spoke.
Finally, Grant whispered,
"I was nineteen."
Brooks folded his arms.
"And?"
"I worked summers at one of Victor's companies."
"You knew it was criminal?"
"No."
Grant shook his head.
"Not at first."
The Beginning
Grant's voice was hollow.
"My father and I argued constantly."
"He wanted me to earn everything."
"I wanted to prove I could build something bigger than he ever had."
Victor Kane had noticed the ambitious college student almost immediately.
"He told me I was smarter than everyone around me."
"He said my father was holding me back."
Grant laughed bitterly.
"I believed him."
For two years, Grant worked for companies that appeared legitimate.
Accounting firms.
Investment offices.
Real estate partnerships.
Only later did he discover they were laundering money.
"When I tried to leave..."
He looked at Evelyn.
"...Victor wouldn't let me."
The Debt
Brooks slid another document across the table.
"Explain this."
It was a loan agreement.
Dated eighteen years earlier.
Amount:
Five million dollars.
Borrower:
Grant Carlisle.
Lender:
Black Eagle Holdings.
Grant stared at it.
"I never received five million."
"No?"
"He called it an investment."
Brooks leaned forward.
"It wasn't."
"It was leverage."
Grant nodded slowly.
"I know that now."
Every favor.
Every promotion.
Every luxury.
Victor had kept a record.
Grant had never owed money.
He had owed obedience.
Walter Found Out
Evelyn quietly asked,
"When did your father learn the truth?"
Grant looked toward the window.
"The day before Lily was born."
Everyone froze.
"He confronted me."
"What did he say?"
Grant's voice cracked.
"He said..."
He swallowed hard.
"...'You don't even realize you're working for the devil.'"
Walter demanded that Grant cut every connection to Victor Kane.
Grant promised he would.
Instead...
He lied.
The Biggest Lie
Evelyn's voice remained calm.
"When did you stop loving us?"
Grant immediately looked at her.
"I never stopped."
Brooks almost laughed.
"You expect anyone to believe that?"
Grant ignored him.
"I loved you."
He looked at Lily through the one-way glass as she sat coloring beside Henry.
"I loved my daughter."
"Then why?"
Grant covered his face.
"Because every year Victor wanted more."
More company access.
More financial records.
More signatures.
When Walter refused...
Victor changed tactics.
"He said if I couldn't control the company..."
Grant's breathing became uneven.
"...someone else would."
The Murder Question
Brooks placed Walter's medical records on the table.
"Did Victor kill your father?"
Grant answered immediately.
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"He terrified him."
"He manipulated him."
"But Walter died from a stroke."
Brooks studied Grant's expression.
For the first time since the investigation began...
He believed him.
The Recording
A technician entered carrying headphones.
"We restored another damaged file."
Walter's voice once again filled the room.
"Grant isn't evil."
Silence.
"He's weak."
Another pause.
"Victor Kane collects weak men."
The room remained perfectly still.
"If you're listening, Evelyn..."
Walter sounded tired.
"...don't waste your life hating my son."
A deep breath.
"Hate the man who taught him that love could be bought."
The recording ended.
Even Brooks lowered his eyes.
The Escape
Suddenly, alarms echoed through FBI headquarters.
A red light flashed above the hallway.
"Security breach!"
Agents reached for their weapons.
Donovan pressed her earpiece.
"What happened?"
A voice answered through static.
"Someone just entered the building using federal credentials."
"Identity?"
The reply came instantly.
"Special Agent Evelyn Carlisle."
Everyone turned toward Evelyn.
She stood beside them.
"So who used my credentials?"
The surveillance feed appeared on a nearby monitor.
A woman wearing Evelyn's tactical uniform walked calmly through a restricted hallway.
From behind...
She looked exactly like Evelyn.
Same height.
Same hair.
Same walk.
Even the facial-recognition system had accepted her.
Brooks whispered,
"Impossible."
The woman reached the evidence vault.
She removed a stolen access card.
Then looked directly into the security camera.
Slowly...
She smiled.
Pulled off a blonde wig.
And revealed dark hair underneath.
Director Donovan recognized her immediately.
"No..."
Brooks looked at the screen.
"You know her?"
Donovan nodded.
"Former Special Agent Rachel Mercer."
Evelyn frowned.
"I trained with her."
Donovan's voice was grim.
"And five years ago..."
She stared at the monitor.
"...she disappeared during an undercover operation."
Everyone had believed Rachel Mercer was dead.
Instead...
She had spent the last five years working for Victor Kane.
As alarms continued echoing through the building, Rachel reached into the evidence vault...
And picked up only one item.
Mr. Buttons.
The teddy bear.
She smiled one last time at the camera before disappearing into the emergency stairwell.
Evelyn's eyes widened.
"The ledger..."
Brooks shook his head.
"No."
He remembered something.
Walter had always thought three steps ahead.
He slowly smiled.
"I don't think Rachel stole what Victor wanted."
Evelyn looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
Brooks reached into his evidence bag.
Inside...
Wrapped in an ordinary brown paper envelope...
Was the real ledger.
Mr. Buttons had been switched with an identical bear the night before.
Rachel had stolen a decoy.
Walter had protected his family one final time.
But Victor Kane still believed he was winning.
And that mistake...
May you like
Would finally bring him into the open.
