Chapter 1 – The Locked Drawer

Chapter 1 – The Locked Drawer

Richard Hale had built one of the largest technology companies in the country, but nothing in the boardroom had prepared him for the silence waiting inside his own home.

The mansion, usually filled with music and the quiet rhythm of staff moving through polished hallways, felt strangely empty that evening. Even the grandfather clock in the foyer seemed louder than usual.

As he stepped inside, the housekeeper hurried toward him.

"Welcome home, sir."

Richard loosened his tie.

"Where's Sophie?"

The woman hesitated for the briefest second.

"I... I believe she's upstairs."

Richard frowned.

"Believe?"

"I haven't seen her since lunch."

That answer unsettled him.

Sophie normally ran to greet him whenever he returned from a business trip. Even on his busiest weeks, she insisted on waiting by the front window.

Today...

Nothing.

He climbed the staircase two steps at a time.

"Sophie?"

No answer.

He checked her bedroom.

Empty.

The playroom.

Empty.

The music room where she practiced piano.

Also empty.

Only after searching nearly the entire house did he notice a faint sound coming from the pantry beside the kitchen.

A tiny rustling.

Richard slowly opened the door.

His heart stopped.

His seven-year-old daughter sat curled in the corner with her knees against her chest.

She looked up so quickly that she nearly dropped what she was holding.

The fear in her eyes struck him harder than anything else.

"Daddy..."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Richard immediately knelt beside her.

"Sweetheart... what are you doing in here?"

For several seconds she simply stared at him, almost as if she were trying to decide whether she was allowed to answer.

Then she quietly placed the small bowl behind her.

Richard reached for it.

His expression changed.

Inside were dry food pellets meant for the family's dogs.

He didn't speak.

His mind refused to accept what he was seeing.

Instead he gently lifted Sophie into his arms.

She felt lighter than he remembered.

Far lighter.

He carried her into the bright kitchen.

"Let's make you something to eat."

She immediately shook her head.

"No..."

"No?"

"I'll get in trouble."

Richard froze.

"With who?"

Sophie looked toward the hallway before lowering her eyes.

"I... I shouldn't say."

Richard crouched until they were eye level.

"No one is going to hurt you."

She hesitated.

Then, almost automatically, she glanced toward the security camera mounted in the corner of the kitchen.

Richard noticed.

Why would a child look at a camera before answering her own father?

He quietly unplugged it.

"There."

She still looked uncertain.

He opened the refrigerator and began preparing a sandwich.

Halfway through, Sophie whispered something so softly he almost missed it.

"Can I really have that?"

Richard turned.

"Of course."

"The whole thing?"

His hands stopped moving.

"The whole sandwich?"

She nodded.

"And... maybe an apple?"

Richard forced himself to smile.

"You can have two apples."

For the first time all day, a tiny smile appeared on Sophie's face.

She sat perfectly straight at the dining table.

Hands folded.

Waiting.

Not touching the plate after Richard placed it in front of her.

"Aren't you hungry?"

She nodded.

"So eat."

She looked confused.

"I didn't ask."

Richard blinked.

"Ask?"

She whispered,

"For permission."

He gently pushed the plate closer.

"You never have to ask me."

Only then did she slowly pick up the sandwich.

But instead of taking a normal bite...

She broke off the smallest possible piece.

Richard watched silently.

Every movement seemed practiced.

Careful.

Measured.

As though she had learned not to take too much.

Not to make noise.

Not to attract attention.

Halfway through eating, footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

Vanessa entered the kitchen carrying a tablet and wearing an elegant white blouse.

She stopped when she saw Richard.

"Oh."

Her smile appeared instantly.

"You're home earlier than expected."

Richard looked at her.

"Why was Sophie hiding in the pantry?"

Vanessa laughed lightly.

"Children play strange games."

Richard didn't answer.

Vanessa noticed the plate.

"I hope she isn't eating before dinner."

Richard kept his voice calm.

"She's hungry."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"I've been teaching her responsibility."

Richard studied her expression.

There wasn't anger.

There wasn't concern.

Only confidence.

The confidence of someone who believed every explanation would be accepted.

It always had been before.

Until today.

That evening, after Sophie had gone to bed, Richard entered his home office.

He opened his laptop.

Instead of reviewing quarterly earnings, he logged into the mansion's security system.

Hours of recordings appeared.

He selected random dates.

Kitchen.

Hallway.

Library.

Playroom.

At first everything seemed ordinary.

Then something caught his attention.

Every weekday between three and five in the afternoon...

Several cameras mysteriously went offline.

Always the same cameras.

Always during the same hours.

He checked maintenance reports.

None existed.

He zoomed in on the system logs.

Manual shutdown.

Authorized by—

Administrator.

Only two people possessed administrator access.

Richard.

And Vanessa.

His stomach tightened.

He continued searching.

Near midnight he found something even stranger.

One camera outside Sophie's bedroom had remained active.

At 9:43 one evening, Sophie quietly stepped into the hallway carrying a blanket.

She looked around nervously.

Moments later Vanessa appeared.

No audio.

Only video.

Vanessa pointed toward another hallway.

Sophie lowered her head.

She slowly walked away.

Richard watched until the recording ended.

Where had she gone?

He switched to another camera.

No footage.

Offline.

Again.

His office suddenly felt cold.

For years he had trusted the woman who claimed she loved his daughter.

Had he missed something hidden in plain sight?

His phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

There was only one sentence.

"If you want the truth about your wife's death... stop trusting Vanessa."

Richard stared at the screen.

Before he could reply, another message arrived.

"Tomorrow. 8:00 a.m. Come alone."

Attached beneath the message was a photograph.

It showed a woman standing beside his late wife, Emily.

The photo had clearly been taken only weeks before Emily's fatal accident.

Richard's pulse quickened.

He had been told Emily was alone that day.

The official investigation had reached the same conclusion.

So who had taken the picture?

And why had it surfaced five years later?

Richard slowly looked toward the second floor, where Sophie was finally sleeping peacefully.

For the first time since Emily's funeral...

May you like

He wondered whether her death had been an accident at all.
