Chapter 13 – The Boardroom of Shadows

Chapter 13 – The Boardroom of Shadows

Forty-eight hours later...

Chicago awoke beneath a sky of steel-gray clouds.

Across the financial district, reporters crowded outside the headquarters of Hale Technologies.

Satellite trucks lined the streets.

News helicopters circled overhead.

No one knew why the emergency shareholders' meeting had been called.

But rumors had spread overnight.

Hostile takeover.

Executive coup.

Federal investigation.

For the first time in the company's history...

Every board member had appeared in person.

Emily's Empty Chair

Richard entered the executive boardroom wearing a navy suit Emily had once bought for him.

The room was exactly as she had left it years before.

A polished walnut table stretched across the center.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the Chicago skyline.

At one end of the table...

One chair remained empty.

Emily's chair.

Richard paused beside it.

Daniel quietly approached.

"You don't have to sit there."

Richard shook his head.

"It belongs to her."

Instead, he placed a single white lily on the table before taking his own seat.

Silence settled over the room.

Unexpected Shareholders

The board secretary began reading the attendance list.

Several familiar names answered.

Then...

"Representative for Blackstone Legacy Holdings."

The doors opened.

Everyone turned.

An elegant woman in her early forties entered confidently.

She wore a charcoal business suit and carried a slim leather portfolio.

Her silver hair was tied neatly behind her head.

She smiled politely.

"My name is Victoria Ashcroft."

"I'll be representing Blackstone Legacy Holdings today."

Richard had never seen her before.

Yet something about her calm confidence reminded him of Emily.

Victoria sat without asking permission.

Then she slid a thick stack of proxy documents across the table.

"Our firm currently controls fifty-three percent of voting shares."

A stunned silence filled the room.

Daniel whispered,

"She owns the company..."

Richard looked at the documents.

Every transfer was legal.

Every signature authenticated.

Someone had spent years quietly acquiring influence.

A Familiar Cane

As the meeting officially began...

The boardroom doors opened once more.

An elderly gentleman entered.

Perfectly tailored black suit.

Silver hair.

Elegant black cane.

Richard's heartbeat slowed.

It was the same man Vanessa had described in the hospital.

The same silhouette Sophie remembered near the lighthouse.

The same figure who had watched the fishing boat from the cliffs.

The old man smiled warmly.

"I apologize for being late."

Victoria immediately stood.

"So did every other representative from Blackstone.

One by one...

Every director connected to the mysterious investment firm rose to their feet.

Not out of courtesy.

Out of respect.

The old man looked toward Richard.

"You must be Richard Hale."

Richard didn't answer.

The stranger continued.

"I've heard wonderful things about your father."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"My father died."

The old man tilted his head.

"So you've been told."

The Vote Begins

The corporate secretary cleared his throat.

"First item of business."

"Election of a new Executive Chairman."

Richard interrupted.

"There isn't a vacancy."

Victoria smiled.

"There will be."

She placed another document before the board.

A legal motion.

Signed by shareholders representing a controlling majority.

Motion to remove Richard Hale as Chief Executive Officer.

Effective immediately.

The room erupted.

Daniel slammed his hand on the table.

"This is absurd!"

"It's legal," Victoria replied calmly.

Thomas leaned toward Richard.

"They're forcing you out before releasing whatever comes next."

Richard remained perfectly still.

Emily had anticipated this.

Emily's Insurance

Richard slowly reached into his briefcase.

"I expected today's vote."

Victoria smiled.

"So did we."

Richard removed a small encrypted drive.

"I also brought something."

The old man with the cane watched carefully.

Richard connected the drive to the boardroom display.

Daniel frowned.

"What are you doing?"

Richard smiled slightly.

"Exactly what Emily wanted."

The screen came alive.

Instead of financial reports...

Emily appeared.

Every person in the room froze.

She wore the same clothes as in her recorded messages.

But this video had never been seen before.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If this recording is playing inside Hale Technologies' boardroom..."

"...then the Circle has already revealed itself."

The old man's pleasant smile faded.

Emily continued.

"Some of you believe you're voting for a company."

"You're actually voting for your own freedom."

Several directors shifted uncomfortably.

Emily calmly displayed dozens of names.

Account numbers.

Shell corporations.

Hidden transfers.

Each linked to members of the Circle.

Victoria's confident expression finally changed.

The Name That Wasn't There

Emily continued.

"You'll notice something unusual."

The next slide appeared.

Every known member of the Circle was identified.

Victor Langford.

Michael Sterling.

Vanessa Cole.

Corporate executives.

Judges.

Politicians.

But one line remained blank.

Current Chairman

UNKNOWN

Daniel looked confused.

"She never identified him."

Richard smiled faintly.

"Keep watching."

Emily nodded in the recording.

"If the Chairman's name is missing..."

"...it's because he believes names create power."

The old man quietly gripped the handle of his cane.

Emily continued.

"He's wrong."

The Hidden Witness

Suddenly, the boardroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Federal marshals entered.

Behind them...

Walked Vanessa.

Her shoulder remained bandaged, but she stood tall.

Richard stared.

"You should still be in the hospital."

Vanessa smiled.

"I had one more promise to keep."

She carried a small evidence case.

Thomas immediately recognized it.

"The original recordings."

Vanessa nodded.

"Every original."

No edited copies.

No duplicates.

The authentic archive Emily had trusted only to her.

She walked to the center of the boardroom.

Then faced the elderly man with the cane.

For the first time in years...

She spoke the words she had been too afraid to say.

"I know who trained me."

Silence.

The old man smiled gently.

"I should hope so."

Vanessa slowly raised a small recorder.

"I also know..."

"...who gave the order to silence Emily."

The old man's smile disappeared.

The room seemed to stop breathing.

Vanessa took one more step.

Raised her eyes.

And finally spoke the name she had carried in secret for five years.

"Arthur Blackwell."

Every face in the boardroom turned toward the elderly man.

No one moved.

Arthur Blackwell sighed.

Then...

He began to clap.

Once.

Twice.

Slowly.

Almost proudly.

"My dear Vanessa..."

He smiled.

"...it took you long enough."

The room fell silent.

Then Arthur Blackwell calmly reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.

Not for a weapon.

For a folded piece of paper.

He placed it gently on the boardroom table.

Across the front, in Emily's handwriting, were four chilling words:

May you like

HE IS NOT THE LAST.
