Chapter 4 – The Vanishing

Chapter 4 – The Vanishing

Richard reached Sophie's bedroom in seconds.

The room was empty.

The curtains billowed as the cold night wind poured through the open window. Broken glass glittered across the hardwood floor beneath the shattered lock.

His heart hammered against his ribs.

"SOPHIE!"

His voice echoed through the mansion.

No answer.

He ran from room to room, checking every closet, every bathroom, every balcony.

Nothing.

By the time security guards rushed inside, Richard was already halfway down the grand staircase.

"Seal every exit!" he shouted.

"No one leaves this property!"

Within seconds the estate went into lockdown.

Electronic gates slammed shut.

Floodlights illuminated every inch of the gardens.

Security vehicles spread across the twenty-acre property.

Richard grabbed the head of security by the collar.

"How could someone enter this house without anyone seeing them?"

The man looked pale.

"Sir... according to the monitoring room..."

"What?"

"No one entered."

Richard stared at him.

"What do you mean no one entered?"

The guard swallowed.

"Every exterior camera has been recording continuously."

Richard didn't wait.

He stormed into the security control room.

More than fifty surveillance screens covered the wall.

"Replay the last fifteen minutes."

The technician obeyed immediately.

The footage began.

Hallway.

Kitchen.

Library.

Main entrance.

Garden.

Everything appeared normal.

Then they switched to the camera outside Sophie's bedroom.

Richard leaned closer.

At 11:42 p.m., Sophie quietly opened her bedroom door.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't struggling.

She simply stepped into the hallway wearing her pink pajamas and carrying her old teddy bear.

She looked toward the end of the corridor...

...and smiled.

Richard frowned.

She was smiling at someone.

But no one appeared on the screen.

"Sophie?" Richard whispered unconsciously.

She nodded gently, as though responding to an invisible voice.

Then she walked away.

The hallway camera followed her.

She stopped in front of an old portrait of Richard's grandfather.

For several seconds...

Nothing happened.

Then Sophie reached behind the painting.

A soft click echoed through the recording.

The massive portrait slowly swung outward.

A hidden doorway appeared behind it.

Every person in the room froze.

"What..."

The security chief whispered.

"There was never a door there."

Richard stared in disbelief.

The hidden passage swallowed Sophie into darkness.

The portrait closed behind her.

Seconds later...

The hallway looked completely normal again.

Silence filled the control room.

Richard turned sharply.

"Open that wall."

The guards rushed upstairs.

Five minutes later...

The enormous oil painting had been removed.

Behind it stood an old steel door built directly into the stone wall.

Its surface was covered in decades of dust.

One of the guards looked confused.

"Sir... according to the blueprints..."

"There isn't supposed to be anything here."

Richard remembered Emily's final letter.

There is one room in this house that no blueprint shows.

His hands trembled.

She had been telling the truth.

The steel door had no visible handle.

Only a tiny keyhole.

Richard slowly removed the silver key from his pocket.

It fit perfectly.

Click.

A deep mechanical sound echoed inside the wall.

The hidden door slowly opened.

A rush of stale air escaped from the darkness.

Richard grabbed a flashlight.

"I'm going in."

The security chief stepped forward.

"Sir, let us check first."

"No."

Richard's voice was firm.

"My daughter is in there."

The hidden passage stretched deep beneath the mansion.

Old brick walls lined the narrow corridor.

Electrical wiring had been added decades later, but most of the lights no longer worked.

The flashlight beam revealed children's footprints in the dust.

Fresh footprints.

Small ones.

Sophie's.

Richard followed them.

Every step tightened the knot in his chest.

Then...

The corridor opened into a large underground room.

It looked untouched for years.

Wooden bookshelves covered every wall.

Boxes were stacked neatly from floor to ceiling.

An antique desk sat beneath a stained-glass window that somehow reached ground level through a concealed shaft.

Everything was coated in dust...

Except one chair.

Someone had used it recently.

Richard slowly swept the flashlight across the room.

Family photographs.

Old journals.

Newspaper clippings.

Architectural drawings of the mansion.

On one wall hung dozens of photographs connected by red string.

Richard stepped closer.

His blood ran cold.

Every photograph centered on one person.

Vanessa.

Some pictures showed her entering office buildings.

Others showed her meeting strangers.

Several had dates written beneath them.

The earliest photograph...

...had been taken nearly seven years ago.

Months before Emily's death.

Emily had been investigating her.

Richard whispered,

"Emily..."

She had known.

"Sir!"

A guard called from across the room.

Richard hurried over.

The guard pointed toward a small wooden table.

There sat Sophie's teddy bear.

Beside it...

A folded note.

Richard unfolded it carefully.

The handwriting was childish.

It belonged to Sophie.

Daddy...

Mommy said you'd find this room one day.

She said if I was ever scared, I should come here because bad people don't know about it.

Richard exhaled.

She hadn't been kidnapped.

She had hidden herself.

But...

Where was she now?

Another note lay beneath the first.

This one wasn't written by Sophie.

It was written by Emily.

Richard...

If Sophie has come here, then she no longer feels safe upstairs.

Trust her instincts.

Children notice danger long before adults admit it exists.

Richard closed his eyes.

The guilt was crushing.

While he had spent years building an empire...

His little girl had been living in fear inside her own home.

Just then...

A guard called from the far corner.

"Sir, you need to see this."

Richard walked over.

Hidden behind a bookshelf stood another steel cabinet.

Inside were dozens of neatly labeled folders.

Each folder contained surveillance photographs.

Financial records.

Private investigator reports.

Every document centered around the same name.

Vanessa Cole.

Richard opened the first report.

Employment history.

Completely fabricated.

University degree.

Forgery.

Birth records.

Multiple inconsistencies.

Passport renewed under a different surname.

Then Richard found something that made his stomach twist.

A family photograph.

Vanessa stood beside an older man.

Richard recognized him instantly.

Victor Langford.

A financier convicted years earlier for orchestrating one of the largest investment fraud schemes in the country.

Richard remembered the trial.

Victor had disappeared before sentencing.

He had never been found.

Beneath the photograph Emily had written:

Not her uncle.

Her father.

Richard felt the room spin.

Vanessa had lied about everything.

Even her identity.

At that exact moment...

One of the security officers received an emergency call through his radio.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

The officer looked horrified.

"Miss Vanessa..."

"What about her?"

"She's gone."

Richard turned sharply.

"What do you mean she's gone?"

"Her bedroom is empty."

Richard sprinted back toward the passage.

By the time he reached the main floor, police officers were already searching the mansion.

Vanessa's room had been completely cleared.

Closets empty.

Drawers empty.

Computer gone.

Passport gone.

Even family photographs had disappeared.

She had planned this.

Inside the wardrobe, detectives found only one object.

A disposable prepaid phone.

Its screen suddenly lit up.

An incoming text message.

Richard picked it up.

The message contained only one sentence.

You found the room... but you're still looking in the wrong place.

Before anyone could react...

The phone automatically erased itself.

Its screen went black forever.

Outside...

Thunder rolled across the night sky.

Far beyond the mansion gates...

A black SUV disappeared into the darkness.

Inside it, Vanessa calmly looked at a photograph of Sophie.

Then she smiled.

"You were right, Emily," she whispered.

"He finally opened the first door."

She folded the photograph and looked toward the driver.

"It's time for Phase Two."

The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror.

"Should we tell him about the island?"

Vanessa's smile slowly faded.

"Not yet."

May you like

"He's still missing the biggest secret."
