Chapter 2 – The Woman at 8:00 A.M.

Chapter 2 – The Woman at 8:00 A.M.
Richard barely slept.
The anonymous text message stayed on the screen of his phone until dawn.
If you want the truth about your wife's death... stop trusting Vanessa.
He had read it at least fifty times.
Every time, the same questions returned.
Who knew about Emily?
Why now?
And why had they waited until after he found Sophie frightened and withdrawn?
At exactly 7:30 a.m., Richard quietly left the mansion.
He told no one.
Not Vanessa.
Not his assistant.
Not even his security team.
The address attached to the message led him across the city to an old botanical garden that had closed years earlier. The once-beautiful greenhouse stood surrounded by cracked pathways and overgrown ivy.
At 7:58, a woman stepped from behind the abandoned glass conservatory.
She was in her early sixties, dressed simply in a navy coat, with silver hair tucked beneath a knitted cap.
When she looked at Richard, tears immediately filled her eyes.
"You look just like your father."
Richard stopped several feet away.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Margaret Ellis."
The name meant nothing to him.
"I worked for Emily."
Richard frowned.
"My wife never employed anyone named Margaret."
Margaret shook her head.
"Not in your company."
She slowly reached into her handbag.
Richard instinctively tensed.
Instead of a weapon, she removed a faded photograph.
Emily stood in the center, smiling brightly.
Beside her was Margaret.
And in Emily's arms...
...a newborn Sophie.
The date printed in the corner made Richard's heart pound.
It had been taken three days after Sophie was born.
"I was Sophie's night nurse," Margaret said quietly.
Richard stared at the photograph.
"I don't remember you."
"You weren't there."
His eyes lifted.
"You were in Singapore negotiating the Helios merger."
She was right.
The biggest acquisition of his career.
He had arrived home two days later.
Margaret continued.
"Emily insisted that you shouldn't interrupt the negotiations. She said you'd worked too hard to lose the deal."
Richard looked away.
Emily had always protected him from unnecessary worry.
"I left six months later."
"Why?"
Margaret hesitated.
"Because someone wanted me gone."
Richard already knew the answer before she spoke.
"Vanessa."
Margaret nodded slowly.
"She wasn't the nanny yet."
"No."
"She was Emily's personal assistant."
Richard frowned.
"That's impossible."
Vanessa had always claimed she'd joined the family after Emily's death.
Margaret gave a sad smile.
"That was the first lie."
Across town...
Vanessa stood in Richard's office inside the mansion.
She opened the bottom drawer of his desk.
Locked.
Her smile disappeared.
She pulled a small key from her pocket.
It didn't fit.
Someone had changed the lock.
She quietly closed the drawer again.
Then walked to the bookshelf.
Behind several business journals sat a black notebook.
She reached for it.
Empty space.
The notebook was gone.
For the first time that morning...
Vanessa looked genuinely nervous.
Back at the greenhouse...
Margaret handed Richard a sealed envelope.
"I promised Emily that if anything ever happened to her..."
She swallowed.
"...I would wait until Sophie turned seven."
Richard's breathing stopped.
"Why seven?"
"Because Emily believed that by then, Sophie would be old enough to remember the truth."
Richard carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Emily's.
His fingers trembled.
He hadn't seen her handwriting in five years.
The first line read:
My dearest Richard,
If you're reading this, it means I wasn't allowed to tell you everything myself.
His vision blurred.
He forced himself to continue.
There are people inside our own home whom you trust completely. Please don't make that mistake again.
Richard looked up.
"When did she write this?"
Margaret answered softly.
"Two weeks before she died."
He continued reading.
I discovered financial transfers using shell companies linked to your foundation. Millions disappeared, but every document pointed back to someone inside the household staff.
Richard's eyes widened.
The Hale Foundation managed hundreds of millions in charitable donations.
If Emily had uncovered fraud...
Someone had motive.
A very powerful motive.
Before he could finish the letter, Margaret gently stopped him.
"Not here."
"What?"
"There are pages missing."
Richard looked down.
The final sheets had been torn away.
"Where are the rest?"
Margaret's expression darkened.
"I don't know."
She looked around the abandoned garden.
"But someone else does."
At Hale Manor...
Sophie sat quietly in the breakfast room.
A plate of pancakes rested before her.
She stared at them.
The cook smiled warmly.
"You can eat, sweetheart."
Sophie whispered,
"Are you sure?"
The cook nodded.
Before Sophie could lift her fork...
Vanessa entered.
The room immediately became silent.
Vanessa smiled.
"Good morning."
Sophie lowered her eyes.
Richard wasn't home.
Without him, the atmosphere changed instantly.
Vanessa walked closer.
"Did you finish your homework?"
"Yes."
"Show me."
Sophie hurried upstairs.
The cook watched her leave.
Something about the little girl's expression made her uncomfortable.
When Vanessa followed Sophie upstairs, the cook quietly pulled out her phone.
She typed a single message to Richard.
Sir... I think you should come home.
Richard's phone vibrated.
He read the message.
His instincts screamed that something was wrong.
"I'm sorry," he told Margaret.
"I have to leave."
She nodded.
"But remember this."
Richard paused.
Margaret looked directly into his eyes.
"Emily wasn't afraid of dying."
Richard felt cold.
"She was afraid Sophie would be left alone."
As Richard drove back toward the mansion, another call came in.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
"Hello?"
The voice was distorted.
Mechanical.
Almost impossible to identify.
"You met Margaret."
Richard slammed the brakes at a red light.
"Who is this?"
"You have forty-eight hours."
"For what?"
"Open Emily's blue jewelry box."
Richard frowned.
"It was empty after her funeral."
A low laugh echoed through the speaker.
"No."
The caller replied.
"It only looked empty."
The line went dead.
Twenty minutes later...
Richard rushed into the mansion.
The entire house was unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
The cook hurried toward him, pale-faced.
"Sir..."
"What happened?"
"I heard shouting upstairs."
Richard sprinted toward Sophie's bedroom.
The door stood slightly open.
Inside...
Vanessa stood calmly beside the window.
Sophie's room had been completely rearranged.
The drawings Emily had made with Sophie...
Gone.
Family photographs...
Gone.
Every picture containing Emily had disappeared from the walls.
Richard slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"Where are they?"
Vanessa smiled.
"I thought it was time Sophie stopped living in the past."
Before Richard could answer...
Sophie quietly walked from her closet holding something hidden behind her back.
She looked at her father with frightened eyes.
"Daddy..."
"What is it?"
With trembling hands, she revealed a tiny blue velvet jewelry box.
Richard's heart stopped.
Emily's blue jewelry box.
The one everyone believed had been empty for five years.
Only now...
It wasn't empty anymore.
Resting inside was a silver key.
Attached to it was a tiny handwritten tag.
May you like
"For Richard... when you finally learn who you married."
