Chapter 6 – Blackwater IslandChapter 6 – Blackwater Island

The rain had not stopped by dawn.

Dark clouds rolled over the Atlantic as Richard's private jet descended toward the small coastal airport in Portland, Maine. Beside him sat Daniel Brooks, retired Detective Thomas Grant, and Sophie, who clutched her worn teddy bear against her chest.

Richard looked over at his daughter.

"Are you feeling okay?"

Sophie nodded.

"I had the dream again."

Richard gently squeezed her hand.

"The lighthouse?"

She nodded once more.

"And Mommy was there."

"What did she say?"

Sophie looked out the window.

"She said we're almost home."

Neither Richard nor Daniel spoke.

Two hours later, they stood on the weathered dock of a quiet fishing village.

A gray-haired harbor master studied Richard carefully.

"You folks looking for Blackwater Island?"

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"You know it?"

The old man hesitated.

"Know of it."

"Can you take us there?"

The harbor master shook his head immediately.

"No one goes there."

"Why?"

"The lighthouse has been abandoned for years."

Thomas stepped forward.

"We'll pay."

"It's not about money."

The old man lowered his voice.

"People disappear out there."

Silence settled over the dock.

Finally, another voice interrupted.

"I'll take them."

Everyone turned.

A weathered fishing captain, perhaps in his late sixties, stood beside an old trawler.

"My name's Elias."

He looked directly at Richard.

"Emily saved my son's life fifteen years ago."

Richard frowned.

"My wife was never in Maine."

Elias smiled sadly.

"That's what she wanted everyone to believe."

The Crossing

The Atlantic was rough.

Waves crashed against the hull as the boat pushed farther from the mainland.

Sophie stood quietly beside Richard.

Without warning, she pointed toward the fog.

"There."

Richard followed her finger.

A faint light flashed through the mist.

The lighthouse.

Daniel checked the navigation chart.

"We're still three miles away."

Yet the light seemed much closer.

Captain Elias looked uneasy.

"It hasn't worked in years."

Richard turned.

"What do you mean?"

"There shouldn't be any light."

The Island

Blackwater Island emerged slowly from the fog.

Tall cliffs surrounded its rocky shoreline.

Above them stood the old lighthouse.

Although abandoned from a distance...

Someone had recently repaired the dock.

Fresh tire tracks crossed the muddy ground.

Richard crouched beside them.

"They're recent."

Thomas nodded.

"Within twenty-four hours."

Someone had reached the island before them.

Emily's Cottage

Hidden behind a grove of pine trees stood a small white cottage.

Its windows were dusty.

Its porch sagged with age.

But the front door...

Was unlocked.

Richard stepped inside.

The air smelled faintly of cedar.

Nothing looked abandoned.

Books lined the shelves.

Fresh flowers rested in a vase.

The fireplace contained ashes no more than a day old.

Someone had been living here.

On the wall hung dozens of photographs.

Emily appeared in nearly all of them.

Some showed her smiling beside fishermen.

Others showed her volunteering at a small medical clinic.

Richard stared in disbelief.

"This... can't be."

Daniel examined the dates.

Most of the photographs had been taken before Richard met Emily.

"You barely knew this part of her life," Daniel said gently.

Richard realized he was right.

He had known Emily as a brilliant attorney, a devoted wife, and Sophie's mother.

But she had lived an entire chapter of her life she had rarely spoken about.

The Locked Study

At the end of the hallway stood a heavy oak door.

Unlike the others, it was locked.

Richard reached into his pocket.

The silver key didn't fit.

Instead, Sophie stepped forward.

"Daddy?"

"What is it?"

She pointed toward the teddy bear.

"The other key."

Richard frowned.

"What other key?"

Sophie carefully reached inside the bear's repaired seam.

Hidden deep within the stuffing...

She removed a tiny brass key.

Richard stared at it.

"I never knew..."

"Mommy said not to tell anyone until we came here."

The brass key turned smoothly.

The study door opened.

Emily's Last Journal

The room was untouched.

A large desk overlooked the sea.

Maps covered one wall.

A typewriter sat beside neatly stacked journals.

On top lay a leather notebook labeled:

Emily Hale – Private Journal

Richard opened the first page.

If Richard is reading this, then the people I feared have already made their move.

He turned another page.

Emily described uncovering a network of financial crimes tied to Victor Langford.

But the next entry shocked him even more.

Vanessa entered our lives under false pretenses. Yet I no longer believe she is my greatest enemy. She has become afraid of the same people I have been investigating.

Richard stopped reading.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

"She thought Vanessa was frightened?"

Richard nodded slowly.

It changed everything.

Had Vanessa been manipulating them...

Or had someone been manipulating Vanessa?

An Unexpected Visitor

A floorboard creaked behind them.

Richard turned instantly.

An elderly woman stood quietly in the doorway.

She carried a lantern.

Her silver hair was tied neatly beneath a scarf.

She showed no sign of surprise.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Richard stepped forward protectively.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Eleanor."

She looked at Sophie.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"You have your mother's smile."

Sophie's grip tightened around Richard's hand.

"You knew Mommy?"

"I helped raise her."

Richard's heart skipped.

"You were in that old photograph."

Eleanor nodded.

"This island was Emily's first home."

She invited them to sit.

For nearly an hour, she told them about Emily's childhood.

Emily had grown up helping fishermen, caring for injured seabirds, and reading every book in the lighthouse library.

She had left the island at eighteen to attend law school.

But she returned every summer.

"She said this place reminded her who she was."

Richard listened in silence.

Then he asked the question that had haunted him for days.

"Did Emily know she was in danger?"

Eleanor's expression became solemn.

"Yes."

"And she believed someone would come after Sophie."

Eleanor nodded.

"She prepared for that long before Sophie was born."

The Lighthouse Bell

Before anyone could ask another question...

A deep bell echoed across the island.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Captain Elias rushed into the cottage.

"They're here!"

Richard stood.

"Who?"

Elias pointed toward the shoreline.

Three black SUVs had just rolled off a large ferry onto the island's hidden eastern dock.

Men in dark clothing stepped out.

Organized.

Disciplined.

One of them raised binoculars toward the cottage.

Thomas immediately recognized the formation.

"They're professionals."

Richard moved Sophie behind him.

"How many?"

"At least twelve."

Daniel looked around the room.

"We have to leave."

Eleanor shook her head.

"No."

She looked directly at Richard.

"If they found the island..."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"...then they already know about the vault beneath the lighthouse."

Richard frowned.

"Vault?"

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"Everything Emily couldn't hide anywhere else..."

She looked toward the towering lighthouse outside the window.

"...is buried beneath it."

At that exact moment...

The lead SUV door opened.

A tall man stepped out wearing a charcoal overcoat.

Even from a distance, Richard recognized him.

Five years earlier, newspapers around the world had reported his disappearance.

Yet there he stood.

Alive.

Victor Langford.

Vanessa's father.

He removed his sunglasses and smiled toward the cottage.

Then, in a calm voice carried by the wind, he called out:

May you like

"Richard... I've been waiting for you."
