Chapter 1 Seventy-Two Hours Begin

Chapter 1

Seventy-Two Hours Begin

Hannah slept for almost sixteen hours after Evelyn brought her home.

She never asked for food.

She never cried.

She simply curled beneath the old quilt that had covered her since childhood and stared at the ceiling as though she had forgotten how freedom felt.

Evelyn sat beside the bed all night.

Every bruise she discovered felt like another knife twisting inside her chest.

Purple fingerprints wrapped around Hannah's wrists.

A healing burn scar hid beneath her sleeve.

Fresh cuts crossed her knees.

None of them had happened in one day.

Someone had been hurting her for months.

At dawn, Evelyn quietly stepped outside onto the diner's back porch.

The October air smelled of wet leaves and coffee beans.

She removed an old leather notebook from her coat pocket.

Inside was only one phone number.

She had not called it in twenty-one years.

Her finger hovered over the page.

Then she dialed.

The call connected after one ring.

A calm male voice answered.

"I wondered if I'd ever hear from you again, Evelyn."

"It's me."

"I know."

"I need the promise you made twenty-one years ago."

Silence.

Then came the reply.

"Has someone touched your family?"

"Yes."

Another pause.

"Then we move immediately."

The line disconnected.

Evelyn stood perfectly still.

For the first time since Richard Carter had died, she felt completely calm.

Inside the diner, the breakfast crowd arrived as usual.

Construction workers.

Teachers.

Retired police officers.

Truck drivers.

None of them noticed that their favorite waitress had quietly declared war.

Meanwhile...

Grant Holloway slammed his fist onto the dining table inside the mansion.

"Find them."

His private security chief nodded.

"We already traced her vehicle."

"Good."

Grant smiled coldly.

"Start with the diner."

Margaret sipped her tea.

"Burn the business first."

"No."

Grant shook his head.

"Not yet."

"I want Hannah to watch her mother lose everything before she comes crawling back."

Across town...

Three black SUVs quietly entered Chicago.

No company logos.

No license plate frames.

No unnecessary attention.

The first vehicle stopped outside Carter's Table.

Four men in dark suits stepped out.

Customers instinctively moved aside.

One elderly customer looked up from his newspaper.

"You boys federal?"

One man smiled politely.

"No, sir."

"We're here for Mrs. Carter."

Evelyn opened the kitchen door.

The tallest man removed a small silver coin from his pocket and placed it on the counter.

She recognized it instantly.

Her breathing stopped.

Only twelve of those coins had ever existed.

Richard had carried one.

The man lowered his voice.

"Mrs. Carter."

"The Director sends his regards."

"We've been waiting twenty-one years for your phone call."

For the first time...

Evelyn smiled.

"Tell the team," she said quietly.

"The seventy-two hours have officially begun."
