Chapter 16: The Woman Who Disappeared

Chapter 16: The Woman Who Disappeared

Margaret Holloway vanished sometime before dawn.

By the time federal agents arrived at Holloway Manor with a warrant, her bedroom was immaculate.

The bed had been made.

The closet was half empty.

Her jewelry box sat open.

The safe behind the painting had been cleared out.

It looked less like a hurried escape...

and more like someone who had been preparing to leave for weeks.

Daniel Mercer surveyed the room.

"No signs of forced entry."

Benjamin Ross nodded.

"She didn't run."

"She was picked up."

Thomas, the longtime butler, waited in the hallway.

"I saw two cars arrive around four this morning."

"Did you recognize anyone?" Benjamin asked.

Thomas shook his head.

"They used the service entrance."

"Mrs. Holloway was expecting them."

"Were there any security cameras?"

Thomas gave a bitter laugh.

"They stopped recording at 3:48."

Daniel exchanged a glance with Benjamin.

"The same playbook."

"Professional."

Meanwhile, Evelyn opened Carter's Table as she always had.

The bell above the door rang.

Coffee brewed.

Bacon sizzled on the grill.

The ordinary rhythm of the diner felt almost sacred after weeks of chaos.

Hannah refilled coffee cups for a group of regulars.

One of them smiled.

"Good to see you laughing again."

She smiled back.

"So is it."

The bruises on her face had almost faded.

The fear in her eyes had begun to fade with them.

Back at headquarters, Benjamin's team combed through Grant's documents.

One email stood out.

It had been sent six months earlier.

From: Margaret Holloway

To: Private Address

"The Chairman believes the Carter girl has become a liability.
Grant lacks discipline.
If necessary, I'll handle the situation personally."

Daniel looked up.

"The Carter girl."

Benjamin nodded grimly.

"They never even called Hannah by her name."

Another attachment followed.

A payment authorization.

Five hundred thousand dollars.

Purpose:

Domestic Resolution.

The room fell silent.

"What exactly does that mean?" one analyst asked.

Benjamin answered quietly.

"It means someone was paid to make Hannah disappear."

Across Wisconsin...

Benjamin, Daniel, Evelyn, and Hannah drove north toward Door County.

The autumn landscape gave way to quiet forests and lakes.

Their destination was a small lakeside cabin registered to Eleanor Pierce.

When they arrived...

Smoke drifted from the chimney.

Someone was home.

Benjamin approached carefully.

An elderly woman opened the door before he could knock.

She looked directly at him.

"It took you long enough."

Benjamin smiled despite himself.

"Eleanor."

She looked past him toward Evelyn.

"You must be Richard's wife."

Evelyn nodded.

"I've wanted to meet you for twenty-three years."

"So have I."

Inside the cabin, shelves overflowed with accounting books and old case files.

Everything was meticulously organized.

Eleanor poured coffee for everyone before sitting down.

"I knew this day would come."

Benjamin leaned forward.

"Did Richard leave anything with you?"

She stood without answering.

From beneath a loose floorboard, she removed a locked metal case.

She placed it on the table.

"I've protected this longer than I've protected my own life."

Daniel examined the lock.

"The key."

Evelyn reached into her purse.

The silver key Richard had hidden inside the oak tree.

It fit perfectly.

The lock clicked open.

Inside the case were twelve sealed envelopes.

Each bore a family name.

Each contained decades of financial records.

Bribery ledgers.

Wire transfers.

Secret ownership agreements.

Richard had been telling the truth.

He had identified every family connected to Blackwood.

Benjamin looked through the files.

Then his expression froze.

One envelope remained unopened.

Unlike the others...

It bore no family name.

Only a single word.

Chairman.

Before anyone could reach for it...

A loud explosion shattered the cabin windows.

Glass rained across the room.

"Down!" Daniel shouted.

A second blast tore through the front porch.

Outside...

Three black SUVs screeched to a halt.

Masked gunmen poured out.

Benjamin grabbed Eleanor.

"Get everyone to the back!"

Daniel overturned the dining table, creating cover.

Bullets tore through the walls.

Wood splintered.

The peaceful cabin became a battlefield.

Evelyn pulled Hannah behind a stone fireplace.

"You stay down."

"I'm not leaving you."

"You won't."

Benjamin drew his service pistol.

"Federal agents!"

"Drop your weapons!"

The only response was more gunfire.

One masked man rushed the front door.

Before he reached it, Daniel fired once.

The attacker fell.

The others retreated behind their vehicles.

"They're trained," Daniel muttered.

"This isn't random."

Eleanor looked toward the metal case.

"They're here for the files."

Benjamin nodded.

"They can't have them."

He grabbed the Chairman envelope and slipped it inside his coat.

Daniel gathered the remaining eleven files into a fireproof evidence bag.

"We're moving!"

The group escaped through a narrow cellar door beneath the kitchen.

A hidden tunnel—built decades earlier as part of an old storm shelter—led toward the woods.

As they disappeared into the trees...

The cabin erupted in flames behind them.

Within minutes, it was fully engulfed.

The attackers searched the ruins.

They found only ashes.

From the safety of the forest, Hannah watched the cabin burn.

"They destroyed everything."

Eleanor shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Benjamin's coat.

"They failed."

Benjamin touched the envelope hidden inside.

The only unopened file had survived.

The one identifying the Chairman.

Or so they hoped.

Hours later, after reaching a secure federal safe house, Benjamin finally placed the envelope on the table.

Everyone gathered around.

Evelyn held Hannah's hand.

Daniel carefully broke the wax seal.

Inside was...

A single sheet of paper.

No financial records.

No names.

No photographs.

Only one handwritten sentence from Richard Carter.

If you are reading this, never open the second envelope anywhere except a federal courtroom.

Daniel frowned.

"There are two envelopes?"

Benjamin turned the page over.

Taped to the back...

was a much smaller sealed envelope.

Marked in Richard's handwriting:

To Be Opened Only Under Oath.

The room fell silent.

Richard had anticipated everything.

Even this.

Someone wanted that envelope badly enough to kill for it.

Now Benjamin understood why.

Whatever lay inside...

May you like

was powerful enough to end Blackwood forever.
