Chapter 11: The Arrest

Chapter 11: The Arrest
Rain pounded the streets of Chicago before sunrise.
At 6:00 a.m., a convoy of unmarked federal vehicles rolled silently through the gates of Holloway Manor.
The security guards barely had time to react before federal agents stepped out.
Their jackets bore only three words.
Federal Financial Crimes Bureau.
Benjamin Ross exited the lead SUV.
He buttoned his coat against the cold rain and walked to the front door.
A butler answered almost immediately.
His expression suggested he had been expecting this moment.
"Director Ross."
Benjamin nodded.
"Thomas."
"It's been a long time."
"It has."
Without another word, Thomas stepped aside.
"They're waiting in the library."
Edward Holloway stood beside the fireplace.
He looked older than he had just twenty-four hours earlier.
Grant paced back and forth.
Margaret sat stiffly on a leather sofa, refusing to acknowledge the agents entering her home.
Benjamin placed a folder on the coffee table.
"Edward James Holloway."
"You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit financial fraud, obstruction of justice, tax evasion, and conspiracy to conceal criminal evidence."
Grant exploded.
"This is ridiculous!"
"You don't have enough evidence."
Benjamin calmly opened the folder.
"I believe we do."
He removed the original ledgers from the warehouse.
Then the internal financial statements.
Then the testimony from Michael Reeves.
Finally...
The email authorizing Hannah's abuse.
Grant's face went pale.
Benjamin looked at him.
"You're not under arrest."
"Not today."
"But don't leave town."
Margaret stood abruptly.
"My husband has lawyers."
Benjamin nodded.
"I'm counting on it."
She stepped closer, her voice trembling with rage.
"You've wanted this for twenty years."
Benjamin met her gaze.
"No."
"I wanted justice."
Edward quietly extended his wrists.
"No handcuffs."
Grant turned in disbelief.
"Dad?"
Edward smiled sadly.
"It's over."
Two agents escorted him toward the door.
Just before stepping outside, Edward stopped.
He looked back at Grant.
"There is something I've never told you."
Grant stepped forward.
"What?"
Edward's voice was barely above a whisper.
"I was never in charge."
The mansion fell silent.
Benjamin noticed Grant's expression.
Confusion.
Fear.
Disbelief.
Exactly the reaction he expected.
Across the city...
News helicopters captured Edward Holloway being escorted into a federal vehicle.
The footage aired live.
Within minutes...
The company's stock plunged another twenty-three percent.
Banks froze new lines of credit.
Major suppliers suspended contracts.
The Holloway empire was collapsing by the hour.
At Carter's Table...
Customers erupted into applause as the breaking news appeared on television.
Someone shouted,
"They got him!"
Evelyn didn't celebrate.
She simply poured another cup of coffee.
Hannah looked at her mother.
"Aren't you happy?"
Evelyn smiled gently.
"This isn't the finish line."
"It's the first mile."
Later that afternoon...
Benjamin began questioning Edward.
The interrogation room was quiet.
Only two chairs.
One table.
A recorder.
Edward looked exhausted.
Benjamin placed Richard's photograph between them.
"You remember him."
Edward nodded.
"Every day."
"You lied for twenty-three years."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Edward stared at the photograph.
"Because Richard gave me a choice."
Benjamin frowned.
"What choice?"
"Help him expose Blackwood..."
"...or protect my family."
Benjamin leaned forward.
"And what did you choose?"
Edward closed his eyes.
"The wrong one."
For nearly an hour, Edward answered every question.
He admitted to fraud.
He admitted to bribery.
He admitted to hiding evidence.
But every time Benjamin asked about Blackwood...
Edward became silent.
Finally, Benjamin pushed the photograph closer.
"Who is Blackwood?"
Edward whispered,
"You keep asking the wrong question."
Benjamin frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Edward slowly looked up.
"Blackwood isn't a person anymore."
"It's a council."
The room became perfectly still.
"A council?"
Edward nodded.
"Twelve families."
"They own banks."
"Shipping companies."
"Investment firms."
"Political campaigns."
"They don't appear on magazine covers."
"They don't run for office."
"They don't need to."
Benjamin's heart sank.
Richard had been right.
The Holloways had only been one piece of something far larger.
That evening...
Daniel rushed into the interrogation room carrying a laptop.
"Ben."
"You need to see this."
He opened a financial news website.
Breaking News flashed across the screen.
Unknown Investor Purchases 28% of Holloway Select Markets Overnight.
Benjamin frowned.
"Who?"
Daniel pointed toward the filing.
The buyer's identity was hidden behind a private trust.
One name appeared.
Blackwood Holdings.
Edward laughed quietly.
Benjamin looked at him.
"You knew."
Edward nodded.
"They're cleaning house."
"What does that mean?"
"It means..."
Edward looked Benjamin directly in the eyes.
"They've decided Grant is expendable."
Across town...
Grant arrived home to find the mansion unusually quiet.
Most of the staff had already resigned.
The lights were off.
A single black envelope rested on the dining room table.
No stamp.
No address.
Just his name.
Inside was a handwritten note.
You failed.
Nothing else.
No signature.
No explanation.
Grant's hands began to shake.
Then he noticed something else.
His home security system had been disabled.
Every camera.
Every alarm.
Every electronic lock.
Someone had entered his home...
Without leaving a trace.
For the first time in his life...
Grant realized he was no longer being protected by wealth.
He was being hunted by the very people his family had served for decades.
And somewhere across the city...
Benjamin Ross looked once more at Richard Carter's old photograph.
He finally understood why Richard had never celebrated small victories.
Because the real enemy had never been standing in front of them.
May you like
It had always been hiding behind them.
