Chapter 8: The Daughter They Tried to Erase

By Friday morning, the Holloway name had become toxic.

News helicopters circled above company headquarters.

Television crews camped outside the mansion.

Every hour brought another headline.

Major Investors Demand Independent Investigation.

Domestic Abuse Allegations Shake Illinois Retail Giant.

Federal Financial Crimes Bureau Confirms Preliminary Review.

Grant refused to watch any of it.

He stood in his office, staring out at the Chicago skyline, trying to convince himself that the storm would pass.

His phone buzzed.

It was his father.

"Come to the boardroom."

Edward's voice was flat.

"No excuses."

When Grant entered, the room was already full.

The entire board of directors sat in silence.

At the far end of the table sat the company's outside legal counsel.

No one offered him a seat.

Edward spoke first.

"We've received notice."

"Notice of what?"

The attorney slid a document across the table.

"A federal preservation order."

Grant frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means no financial records can be altered, deleted, or destroyed."

Grant's face tightened.

"And if they are?"

The attorney didn't hesitate.

"Obstruction of justice."

For the first time since the scandal began, Grant realized this was no longer just a public relations crisis.

It was becoming a criminal investigation.

Meanwhile, Hannah returned to the diner.

She had insisted on helping with the lunch crowd.

At first, Evelyn objected.

"You should rest."

"I've rested long enough."

She tied on an old blue apron—the same apron she had worn during high school before leaving for college.

Several longtime customers recognized her immediately.

"Hannah?"

She smiled shyly.

"It's been a while."

An elderly firefighter stood from his booth.

"I remember when you used to steal cherry pie from the kitchen."

Hannah laughed.

"I didn't steal it."

"You gave it to me."

The entire diner burst into laughter.

For the first time in years...

Hannah felt like herself again.

Not Grant Holloway's wife.

Not Margaret Holloway's servant.

Just Hannah Carter.

That afternoon, Daniel Mercer entered carrying another file.

"We found someone."

Benjamin looked up.

"Who?"

"A housekeeper."

"The Holloways fired her three months ago."

"Why?"

"Because she tried to help Hannah."

Two hours later, Maria Alvarez sat inside the secure warehouse.

She looked nervous.

"I've never done anything like this."

Benjamin smiled reassuringly.

"You only have to tell the truth."

Maria nodded.

"I worked for the Holloways for eleven years."

She clasped her hands tightly.

"I saw Mrs. Holloway pull Hannah down the stairs."

Hannah closed her eyes.

"I saw Mr. Grant slap her because dinner wasn't ready."

Daniel quietly turned on the recorder.

Maria continued.

"I saw them lock her in the guest room overnight."

The room fell silent.

Benjamin asked gently,

"Did anyone else witness this?"

Maria nodded.

"The chauffeur."

"The gardener."

"The private chef."

"And three security guards."

Daniel exchanged a glance with Benjamin.

"If they're willing to testify..."

Benjamin finished the thought.

"...the Holloways are finished."

Late that evening...

Margaret gathered every remaining household employee in the mansion's grand hall.

"If anyone speaks to investigators..."

"...you're fired."

No one answered.

She looked around impatiently.

"Do you understand?"

Still silence.

Finally, the elderly butler stepped forward.

His name was Thomas.

He had served the Holloway family for thirty-four years.

"I understand, Mrs. Holloway."

She smiled with relief.

Then Thomas calmly removed a set of keys from his pocket.

He placed them on the marble table.

"I also resign."

Margaret stared.

"What?"

"I should have resigned the first time you struck Mrs. Hannah."

"You ungrateful old fool."

Thomas met her eyes without fear.

"No."

"I've simply remembered the difference between loyalty..."

"...and obedience."

One by one, other employees stepped forward.

The chauffeur.

The chef.

Two maids.

A groundskeeper.

Each quietly placed their keys beside Thomas's.

Within five minutes...

Nearly half the household staff had resigned.

Margaret stood speechless as they walked out together.

Across the city, those same employees arrived at Benjamin Ross's secure office.

Daniel greeted them one by one.

Every statement matched.

Every timeline aligned.

Every witness confirmed the same horrifying pattern.

Years of psychological abuse.

Months of physical violence.

Grant's silence.

Margaret's cruelty.

Benjamin slowly closed the final witness statement.

"This is no longer one woman's word against another."

He looked around the room.

"This is a conspiracy of abuse."

That night, Evelyn sat alone on the diner's front porch.

Benjamin joined her carrying two cups of coffee.

"You look tired."

She smiled faintly.

"I am."

They sat in comfortable silence.

Finally, Benjamin asked,

"Do you ever regret not telling Hannah who Richard really was?"

Evelyn looked toward the glowing diner sign.

"No."

"I wanted her to build her own life."

"And now?"

"Now she finally knows the kind of man her father was."

Benjamin nodded.

"He'd be proud of both of you."

Evelyn's eyes glistened.

"I hope so."

Benjamin reached into his coat pocket and handed her a sealed envelope.

"It came this afternoon."

"No return address."

Evelyn opened it carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Richard Carter standing beside a much younger Edward Holloway.

The two men appeared to be arguing outside an old warehouse.

Written on the back, in faded black ink, were six chilling words:

He knew everything from the beginning.

Evelyn's heart skipped a beat.

She looked up at Benjamin.

"If this is real..."

Benjamin nodded grimly.

"It changes everything."

Because if Edward Holloway had known Richard Carter before the investigation...

Then the Holloways' secrets had begun decades before Hannah ever married Grant.

And the war Evelyn thought was about saving her daughter...

May you like

Had just become something far bigger.
