Chapter 9: The Secret Richard Took to His Grave

Chapter 9: The Secret Richard Took to His Grave

Evelyn barely slept.

The photograph lay on the kitchen table beside Richard's old wedding band.

She had stared at it for hours.

Richard Carter and Edward Holloway.

Standing face to face outside a warehouse.

Both younger by nearly twenty-five years.

Both visibly angry.

One question echoed in her mind.

Why had Richard never mentioned Edward Holloway?

At seven the next morning, Benjamin Ross arrived at the diner.

Without a word, Evelyn slid the photograph across the counter.

Benjamin studied it carefully.

"I haven't seen this in over twenty years."

"You recognize it?"

He nodded.

"The warehouse."

"Where is it?"

"South Chicago."

"It belonged to a logistics company we were investigating."

Evelyn frowned.

"I thought Richard investigated financial crimes."

"He did."

Benjamin's expression hardened.

"But money has to move before it can be hidden."

He turned the photograph over again.

"Edward Holloway claimed he'd never met Richard."

"So he lied."

Benjamin looked Evelyn in the eyes.

"Not just once."

"For decades."

Daniel Mercer entered carrying a weathered cardboard box.

"We found something in the archives."

Benjamin opened it.

Inside were dozens of dusty case files.

One folder was marked:

Operation Iron Ledger

Benjamin slowly removed the first document.

Across the top was Richard Carter's signature.

The second page listed the primary subjects of the investigation.

One name immediately caught everyone's attention.

Edward James Holloway

Hannah looked stunned.

"My father investigated my father-in-law?"

Benjamin nodded.

"Long before you were born."

Richard's handwritten notes filled nearly every page.

"Subject appears legitimate in public."

"Evidence suggests hidden ownership through proxy corporations."

"Insufficient proof for indictment."

"Continue surveillance."

Daniel flipped through the file.

"There are hundreds of pages."

Benjamin sighed.

"And half are missing."

"What happened to them?"

"No idea."

Someone had removed an entire section of Richard's investigation.

Across town...

Grant stood outside his father's study.

"You knew Richard Carter."

Edward remained silent.

Grant's voice grew sharper.

"Answer me."

Finally, Edward looked up.

"Yes."

Grant stared.

"You told me you'd never heard his name."

"I lied."

"Why?"

Edward walked to the window overlooking the estate.

"Because Richard Carter nearly destroyed everything I built."

Grant's face tightened.

"What are you talking about?"

Edward spoke quietly.

"Before Holloway Select Markets became respectable..."

"...we were desperate."

"We borrowed money from dangerous people."

Grant frowned.

"What kind of people?"

"The kind who don't forgive debt."

Edward closed his eyes.

"I made choices."

"I spent the next twenty-five years pretending those choices never happened."

Grant stepped backward.

"Mom knows?"

Edward nodded once.

"Everything."

Grant felt his stomach turn.

"So all this time..."

"Our family wasn't protecting its reputation."

Edward looked away.

"We were protecting our freedom."

Meanwhile...

At the operations center, analysts continued examining Richard's files.

One young investigator called Daniel over.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"I found something hidden."

Inside the back cover of the file was a folded map.

Several locations had been marked with red ink.

One address was circled three times.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

"The old Holloway warehouse."

Benjamin frowned.

"It burned down twenty-one years ago."

"Officially."

The investigator zoomed in on an old satellite image.

"What if only the top burned?"

Silence filled the room.

Benjamin slowly smiled.

"I think Richard left us one last clue."

By late afternoon, Benjamin obtained a federal search warrant.

A small team arrived at the abandoned warehouse.

The building had long since been condemned.

Broken windows.

Collapsed roof.

Rusted steel doors.

Nature had reclaimed most of it.

Daniel walked carefully through the debris.

Richard's map led them to what had once been the accounting office.

"There."

Benjamin pointed toward the cracked concrete floor.

Ground-penetrating radar was brought in.

Minutes later, the operator looked up.

"There's a hollow space underneath."

Workers began removing the damaged concrete.

After nearly an hour...

A rusted steel hatch appeared.

No one spoke.

Benjamin carefully pulled it open.

A narrow staircase disappeared into darkness.

Flashlights illuminated a hidden basement.

Dust covered everything.

Metal filing cabinets lined the walls.

Stacks of waterproof storage boxes remained untouched.

Daniel opened the nearest cabinet.

His eyes widened.

"Ben..."

Benjamin walked over.

Inside were original financial ledgers.

Cash payment logs.

Shipping manifests.

Signed contracts.

Everything Richard Carter had spent years trying to prove.

Untouched.

Waiting.

Benjamin carefully picked up the top ledger.

The final page carried a familiar signature.

Edward Holloway

Below it were the signatures of three other businessmen.

One name made everyone freeze.

Judge Harold Whitmore.

Daniel looked up.

"A sitting judge?"

Benjamin's expression darkened.

"He wasn't sitting then."

"He became one later."

Daniel slowly closed the ledger.

"This case just became bigger than the Holloways."

That evening, as evidence was cataloged, one investigator opened the last storage box.

Inside was a VHS tape sealed in plastic.

A handwritten label read:

If I don't come back... show this to Ben.

Benjamin's hands trembled.

"It can't be."

He hadn't heard Richard's voice in more than two decades.

The tape was rushed to the evidence lab.

Minutes later, the old television flickered to life.

Static filled the screen.

Then Richard Carter appeared.

He looked exhausted.

Bruised.

But determined.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Ben... if you're watching this..."

"...then they were faster than we expected."

He paused.

Then said the words that stunned everyone in the room.

"Edward Holloway isn't the man running this organization."

Benjamin's eyes widened.

Richard continued.

"He's only the banker."

The tape abruptly ended.

The screen went black.

Silence filled the room.

For months, Evelyn had believed she was fighting one wealthy family.

Now...

Richard's final message revealed a terrifying truth.

The Holloways were never the people at the top.

They were working for someone else.

May you like

Someone powerful enough to remain hidden for more than twenty years.
