The billionaire's fiancée was burning his silent daughter's hair when I caught her.

Five seconds later, I drove her away from the child and she crashed against the bathtub.

Before the night ended, one of us would leave the Callahan estate in handcuffs.

The smell reached me halfway down the marble hall. Burned hair. Hot metal. Something bitter enough to make my stomach turn before my mind understood why.

I dropped the laundry basket and ran.

Inside the master bathroom, seven-year-old Lily Callahan sat frozen on a velvet stool. Her small hands clutched the seat. A blackened patch curled near her scalp. Behind her, Renata Cole held a styling wand against another lock of hair.

"Stop moving," Renata whispered. "You make everything harder."

Lily opened her mouth, but no sound came out.

I crossed the room and caught Renata's wrist. "Get away from her."

She twisted toward me, shocked that the housekeeper had touched her. When she tried to reach Lily again, I shoved her aside. Renata slipped on the bath mat and struck the side of the tub.

I lifted Lily from the stool. She buried her face against my apron and shook.

"You assaulted me," Renata said, rising with murder in her eyes. "I will have you arrested."

"You were hurting her."

"I was fixing her hair for the gala."

She pressed the intercom. "Security. Call the police. The nanny attacked me and tried to injure the child."

Then she smiled at me. "Who will Grant believe? His future wife or a broke employee with a sick mother?"

The bathroom door opened.

Grant Callahan stood there in his tuxedo. Behind him were two officers, security chief Caleb Ward, and the estate's event manager holding a tablet that showed the live camera feed.

Grant looked at the hot wand on the floor, the mark in Lily's hair, and Renata's raised hand.

Lily lifted her face.

For two years she had not spoken a word.

"Daddy," she whispered.

Grant went completely still.

Lily pointed at Renata.

"She killed Mommy."
