Chapter 2 - THE FIRST WORD

No one moved for several seconds.

The music from the charity gala drifted through the floor below us, bright and elegant, while Grant stared at his daughter as if the entire mansion had disappeared.

"Lily," he said carefully. "What did you say?"

Her courage vanished as quickly as it had arrived. She pressed her face into my shoulder and began to tremble again.

Renata recovered first.

"She is confused," she said. "Emma has been filling her head with stories. Look at the child. She is terrified of that woman."

Officer Daniels stepped between us. "Nobody touches the child. Everyone stays where they are."

Caleb picked up the styling wand with a folded towel. The red light was still glowing.

"The bathroom camera caught the last four minutes," he said.

Renata's eyes snapped toward the tablet. "There is no camera in here."

Caleb looked at her. "There is one in the hall mirror. It covers the doorway and part of this room. You approved the security upgrade yourself."

The event manager replayed the footage. It showed me running inside. It showed Renata yanking Lily upright. It showed smoke rising from the child's hair before I ever touched Renata.

Grant watched without blinking.

"Take Ms. Cole downstairs," he said.

Renata laughed once. "You cannot be serious."

"I said downstairs."

The officers escorted her away, but she turned at the door.

"Ask your daughter why she waited two years," Renata said. "Ask her what she did in that car."

Lily made a small sound against my chest.

Grant heard it.

His face changed.

Dr. Lena Morris, Lily's speech therapist, arrived twenty minutes later. She asked for a quiet room, dim lights, and no questions about the accident. Grant agreed, although every muscle in his jaw looked tight enough to break.

While Lily sat with the doctor, I gave my statement. I explained the threats, the hot wand, and the way Renata knew details from my personnel file.

Caleb frowned. "Only three people can open employee medical records."

"Who?" I asked.

"Me. Mr. Callahan. And Renata."

Then his phone buzzed.

He read the message twice.

"Sir," he said to Grant, "someone accessed the archived security files from the night your wife died."

Grant turned toward him.

"When?"

May you like

Caleb swallowed.

"Seven minutes ago.
