Lily sat beside Dr. Morris with her rabbit in her lap. Grant sat across the aisle from the child protection attorney. I waited outside until my name was called.

The attorney asked whether Grant had spent enough time with his daughter.

"No," I said.

Grant lowered his eyes.

The attorney looked surprised by my honesty. "Then you believe he neglected her?"

"I believe grief made him hide inside work. I believe Renata used that distance. I also believe he has taken responsibility and changed his behavior since learning the truth."

"Would you trust him alone with Lily?"

"Yes. But trust should come with oversight, therapy, and daily effort. Money does not replace parenting."

Grant's lawyer looked uncomfortable. Grant did not.

He thanked me when I stepped down.

Lily spoke privately with the judge in chambers. No one asked her to describe the violence in detail. She explained that her father had been absent, but Renata had been the person who frightened her into silence. She said she wanted to remain with Grant and wanted me to stay in her life.

The judge allowed Lily to return home under a structured safety plan. Grant accepted every condition without argument.

Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded the steps. Grant did not give a speech. He lifted Lily into the car and left through a protected entrance.

That evening, he offered me a large settlement and a new position as Lily's private guardian.

I refused the settlement.

"I will not be paid for telling the truth," I said.

"Then name what you need."

I thought of every worker who had remained silent because rent, insurance, and fear trapped them.

"Create an independent child-safety office for every property and company you control," I said. "No family member can overrule it. No employee loses health insurance for reporting abuse."

Grant agreed.
