Chapter 19 - THE LAST ESCAPE

Renata had not escaped alone.

A deputy had been paid to unlock the service corridor. She took his uniform jacket, crossed the loading dock, and entered a waiting delivery van.

Police found the van abandoned near the Hudson train station.

Inside was a photograph of Lily leaving therapy that morning.

Grant's security team moved Lily to a protected apartment. I stayed with her while officers searched the city.

At midnight, the building fire alarm activated.

This time I did not smell smoke.

I heard the stairwell door open.

Renata stepped into the hall wearing a dark coat. She held no gun, only a small bottle and a rag.

"You ruined my life," she said.

I moved between her and the apartment door. "You did that yourself."

"Where is Lily?"

"Far from you."

Renata rushed at me. We struck the wall and fell hard. The bottle rolled away. I caught her wrist before the rag reached my face.

She was stronger than I expected, but desperation made her careless.

I pulled the fire alarm lever beside us.

Doors opened across the floor. Witnesses appeared. Security cameras turned toward the flashing lights.

Renata froze.

She had spent years committing cruelty in private.

Now an entire hallway was watching.

Grant and Detective Hayes came through the stairwell with officers behind them. Renata tried to run, but Hayes brought her to the floor and secured the cuffs.

"This time," Hayes said, "you stay in them."

The jury returned the next morning after being told nothing about the escape until deliberations ended.

Guilty of conspiracy to commit murder.

Guilty of child endangerment.

Guilty of evidence tampering, kidnapping conspiracy, and financial crimes.

Renata showed no emotion until Lily's victim statement was read.

I was quiet because you made me scared. I am not quiet now.

Renata lowered her head.

And the courtroom finally heard the silence she had earned.
