Chapter 12 - THE FALLING WING

The west wing started coming apart around us.

A section of ceiling crashed where Grant had been tied seconds earlier. Dust filled the corridor. Fire alarms screamed even though there was no fire.

Hayes ordered everyone toward the tunnel.

Owen still hung from the steel beam. He begged for help. Grant could have left him. Instead, he crawled across the broken floor and pulled him up with one hand.

"You helped kill my wife," Grant said. "You will live long enough to answer for it."

We reached the service ladder as another wall collapsed behind us. Vale remained on the lower platform, refusing to drop his gun.

"Thomas!" Grant shouted. "Take my hand."

Vale aimed at him.

Before he could fire, the platform gave way. Hayes caught his coat and the rescue officers hauled him onto solid ground.

Even then, he tried to bite one officer and reach for the weapon.

Outside, Lily ran from the command van and threw herself into Grant's arms. He held her so tightly that both of them shook.

Vale and Owen were taken into custody. The film remained safely locked in the district attorney's evidence vault. Raids uncovered millions in stolen money and altered inspection reports.

Yet Renata's lawyer still claimed she knew nothing about the crash.

Then Detective Hayes found a hidden account in Renata's name. The first deposit arrived the morning after Margaret died. The amount matched the transfer approved by Vale.

The case seemed complete.

Until Caleb called from the hospital.

"The voice recorder is missing," he said.

The evidence bag had been sealed inside a police locker. The lock was intact. The camera showed no one entering.

Hayes checked the access record.

The locker had been opened remotely using her own badge number.

She looked at us in disbelief.

Someone inside the investigation was still working for Renata.
