Chapter 11: The Princess No One Was Meant to Find

Chapter 11: The Princess No One Was Meant to Find

The underground vault became deathly still.

No one lowered a weapon.

No one dared breathe.

Only one word echoed through Aria's mind.

Princess.

The stranger stood beneath the emergency lights, his black leather gloves spotless despite the chaos surrounding him. He was somewhere in his early sixties, tall, broad-shouldered, with silver threaded through dark hair. There was no arrogance in the way he carried himself.

Only authority.

The kind that didn't need to announce itself.

Edward Sterling quietly stepped aside.

Not out of fear.

Out of respect.

Dante noticed.

That disturbed him more than the guns pointed in his direction.

Aria stared at the man.

"I don't know you."

His expression softened almost imperceptibly.

"No."

"You were never allowed to."

He looked at her with an emotion she couldn't identify.

Regret.

Twenty-two years of it.

"My name is Alexander Harper."

The surname struck her immediately.

Harper.

Her mother's surname.

The one printed on the birth certificate.

Her breathing became uneven.

"Harper..."

The man nodded.

"Elizabeth Harper was my daughter."

Aria's eyes widened.

"No..."

He continued quietly.

"Which makes you..."

"My granddaughter."

The world tilted beneath her feet.

She instinctively stepped backward.

"No."

"My grandfather died before I was born."

"That's what Edward wanted you to believe."

Alexander's voice remained calm.

"He has buried many people over the years."

"Some only on paper."

Dante never lowered his pistol.

"If that's true..."

"Why appear now?"

Alexander looked directly at him.

"Because you finally found the bank box."

"You've reached the point where hiding the truth is no longer possible."

Edward folded his arms.

"I warned you this day would come."

Alexander ignored him.

Instead, he looked at Aria.

"Your mother wasn't a Sterling."

"She married Edward against my wishes."

"Not because I hated him..."

"...because I knew exactly what he was."

Aria's voice trembled.

"My mother loved him."

Alexander slowly shook his head.

"No."

"She feared him."

Edward laughed.

"A touching story."

"You've had twenty-two years to rehearse it."

Alexander finally looked at him.

His eyes became ice.

"You murdered my daughter."

The accusation echoed through the vault.

Aria stopped breathing.

Edward smiled.

"Can you prove it?"

Alexander answered simply.

"Yes."

He reached into his briefcase.

Not for a weapon.

For another envelope.

He tossed it across the marble floor.

It slid to Dante's feet.

Dante carefully picked it up while keeping his pistol trained on Edward.

Inside...

Autopsy photographs.

Medical reports.

Private forensic analysis.

Elizabeth Harper had not died in a car accident.

The report concluded:

Cause of death: blunt force trauma before the vehicle entered the river.

Dante slowly looked toward Edward.

"You killed your own wife."

Edward didn't even flinch.

"You should read the entire report."

Dante turned another page.

His eyes narrowed.

There was a second conclusion.

Evidence deemed inadmissible after federal intervention.

Someone had buried the investigation.

Aria's knees weakened.

"My mother..."

"She didn't abandon me."

Alexander's eyes filled with sorrow.

"No."

"She died trying to escape with you."

Tears streamed down Aria's face.

Every bedtime story.

Every excuse.

Every lie Edward had ever told...

Collapsed all at once.

Suddenly...

The emergency lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every monitor inside the vault activated simultaneously.

Security cameras.

News channels.

Hallway feeds.

Each screen displayed the same image.

A silver raven.

A distorted voice filled the vault.

"I see everyone arrived on time."

Alexander's expression changed instantly.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

"The Raven..."

Luca whispered through Dante's earpiece.

"It's him."

The voice laughed.

"No."

"It's us."

The screen divided into dozens of smaller images.

Each showed a different person.

Judges.

Business executives.

Police commissioners.

Military officers.

Politicians.

All wearing identical silver raven pins.

Aria stared in horror.

"They're everywhere."

Alexander answered quietly.

"I've been trying to destroy them for thirty years."

The distorted voice continued.

"Mr. Rossi."

"You've become... inconvenient."

The screens changed again.

Now they showed the Rossi estate.

Flames.

Destroyed vehicles.

Bodies covered with white sheets.

Luca's voice exploded through Dante's earpiece.

"Boss!"

"They hit the mansion again!"

"They waited until we left!"

Dante's jaw tightened.

"Casualties?"

A long silence.

Then—

"We lost twelve men."

Dante closed his eyes.

Only for a second.

Twelve families.

Twelve loyal soldiers.

Gone.

The Raven spoke again.

"Your war is no longer with Edward Sterling."

"He merely served his purpose."

Edward looked toward the screens.

"What are you doing?"

The voice ignored him.

"Mr. Sterling..."

"You've become unnecessary."

Edward frowned.

"What?"

Every screen suddenly displayed classified government files.

Bank transfers.

Assassination orders.

Bribery records.

Each one signed by Edward Sterling.

Then...

Every document was transmitted.

Live.

To every major news network in America.

Edward's face lost all color.

"You fool!"

He shouted at the screens.

"You've destroyed everything!"

The Raven answered coldly.

"No."

"You did."

Outside the vault...

Police sirens began screaming.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

The entire financial district filled with emergency vehicles.

Luca's voice returned.

"Boss!"

"The FBI."

"State Police."

"Homeland Security."

"They're surrounding the bank."

Edward looked toward the exit.

"They're here for me."

Alexander quietly corrected him.

"No."

"They're here because someone wanted every player trapped in one place."

Then came the explosion.

The floor shook violently.

Concrete cracked.

The lights failed completely.

The massive vault door slammed shut with a thunderous boom.

Emergency locking bolts engaged automatically.

No one was getting in.

No one was getting out.

A computerized voice echoed through the darkness.

Vault lockdown activated.

Estimated oxygen supply: 58 minutes.

Silence followed.

Then the Raven spoke one final sentence through the dying speakers.

"There can only be one king..."

"...and one princess."

The transmission ended.

Darkness swallowed the vault.

Somewhere in the darkness...

A single gunshot echoed.

Then another.

Someone cried out in pain.

Aria reached blindly for Dante.

His hand found hers immediately.

But another hand...

May you like

Reached for her shoulder from behind.
