Chapter 8: The Woman in the Photograph

Chapter 8: The Woman in the Photograph

The Rossi estate had never felt so quiet.

By sunrise, every entrance was guarded.

Every employee had been questioned.

Every vehicle entering or leaving the property was searched.

No one complained.

Someone had infiltrated the Rossi compound.

Someone had murdered a priest inside sacred ground.

And someone had tried to kidnap Dante Rossi's wife.

For the first time in years...

The king of Boston's underworld realized his fortress was no longer untouchable.

Dante stood alone in his office.

Elizabeth Sterling's diary rested unopened on the desk.

Beside it lay the silver key.

The photograph of six-year-old Aria.

And the fingerprint report identifying the dead attacker as Michael Carter.

Nothing fit together.

Someone knocked.

"Come in."

Luca entered carrying a sealed evidence box.

"Our forensic team recovered this from the tunnel."

Inside was the skull mask worn by the assassin.

Dante examined it carefully.

Then something caught his eye.

Inside the mask, stitched into the lining, was a tiny embroidered symbol.

A silver raven.

Luca frowned.

"I've never seen that crest."

Dante had.

His expression darkened.

"My father once told me about it."

"What is it?"

"A ghost."

Twenty-five years earlier...

Before Dante had inherited the Rossi empire...

There had existed a secret organization.

Not a mafia family.

Not a government agency.

Something in between.

Powerful enough to manipulate judges.

Police commissioners.

Even senators.

Its members never used names.

Only symbols.

The silver raven belonged to one of its highest-ranking operatives.

People whispered one sentence whenever they mentioned them.

"If the Raven is watching... someone is about to disappear."

Luca looked uneasy.

"I thought that organization was destroyed."

"So did everyone else."

Dante closed the evidence box.

"They're alive."

"And somehow..."

He looked toward the diary.

"...they're connected to Aria."

Across the mansion...

Aria sat alone in the library.

Elizabeth's diary remained closed in her lap.

She wanted to open it.

She was terrified to.

If the priest had spoken the truth...

Everything she believed about her childhood was a lie.

The library door slowly opened.

Maria, the elderly housekeeper, entered carrying fresh tea.

"You haven't slept."

Aria smiled weakly.

"I keep hearing the gunshots."

Maria placed the tray down gently.

"That never truly leaves you."

Aria looked up.

"You've heard gunfire before?"

The older woman hesitated.

Then nodded.

"I've served the Rossi family for thirty-six years."

"There were difficult times."

She noticed the diary.

"Is that hers?"

"You knew my mother?"

Maria's eyes filled with emotion.

"I knew Elizabeth."

"She laughed more loudly than anyone in this house."

Aria blinked.

"This house?"

Maria smiled sadly.

"Yes."

"She used to visit here."

Long before you were born."

Aria's breath caught.

"My mother...came to the Rossi estate?"

"Many times."

"But my father said she hated this family."

Maria quietly shook her head.

"Your father said many things."

Aria slowly opened the diary.

The pages had yellowed with age.

The first entry was dated twenty-three years earlier.

She began reading.

My dearest little girl,

If you are reading this, then I have failed to protect you myself.

Aria's vision blurred.

The handwriting was elegant.

Gentle.

Alive.

Her mother's voice seemed to echo through every word.

One day you will be told that I abandoned you.

That is a lie.

You will be told your father loved us.

That is another lie.

A tear landed on the page.

Edward Sterling does not love anyone.

He loves power.

He will hurt anyone to keep it.

Even his own family.

Aria's hands began trembling.

She forced herself to continue.

If he still has you...

Never tell him about the key.

Never tell him about the Raven.

And never let him discover who your real father was.

The diary slipped from Aria's hands.

It hit the floor with a dull thud.

Her breathing stopped.

Real father?

The words echoed inside her mind.

"No..."

"No..."

"It can't..."

At that exact moment...

Dante entered the library.

He immediately saw her pale face.

"What happened?"

Without speaking, Aria handed him the diary.

He read the final paragraph.

His expression hardened.

"So the priest was right."

She looked at him with terrified eyes.

"My father..."

Her voice broke.

"...isn't my father?"

Dante answered honestly.

"I don't know."

"But someone wanted you to believe he was."

Before either of them could say another word...

The mansion's emergency alarm suddenly blared.

A guard's panicked voice echoed through the intercom.

"Boss!"

"We've got multiple vehicles approaching the main gate!"

Luca's voice followed immediately.

"They're not slowing down!"

Dante walked to the window.

Three black armored SUVs smashed through the outer checkpoint.

Rossi guards opened fire.

The attackers returned fire with military precision.

Bullets shattered stone pillars.

Smoke grenades exploded across the front courtyard.

"This isn't a raid," Luca shouted through the radio.

"They're trying to breach the house!"

Dante turned toward Aria.

His decision came instantly.

"Stay behind me."

She looked at the gun cabinet mounted beside the fireplace.

Then back at Dante.

"I won't hide."

He paused.

"You've never fired a weapon."

"No."

"But they've come for me."

She lifted her chin.

"I'm done letting other people die because of me."

For the first time...

Dante didn't see a frightened bride.

He saw the woman fighting to survive.

A faint smile crossed his face.

"Then stay close."

He opened the gun cabinet and removed a compact pistol.

After checking the safety, he placed it gently into her trembling hands.

"I'm not giving this to you to kill."

"I'm giving it to you to live."

She nodded once.

Outside...

The mansion's front doors exploded inward.

Boots thundered across the marble floor.

A cold voice echoed through the entrance hall.

"Find the diary."

"Kill Dante Rossi."

"But bring Aria Sterling back alive."

The war had finally arrived at the Rossi estate.
