Chapter 12: The Betrayal Underground

Chapter 12: The Betrayal Underground
The gunshot echoed through the sealed vault.
Then came another.
A third.
Metal screamed against metal as bullets ricocheted off the steel walls.
Aria instinctively reached for Dante.
His hand found hers in the darkness.
"Stay behind me."
His voice was calm.
Steady.
The kind of calm that made fear itself hesitate.
Emergency lights flickered back to life.
Dim red lamps cast long shadows across the underground vault.
The scene before them had changed.
One of Edward Sterling's bodyguards lay dead.
A bullet through his forehead.
Edward himself stood frozen, staring across the room.
Alexander Harper had disappeared.
Only his briefcase remained where he had been standing.
Luca's voice crackled through Dante's earpiece.
"Boss!"
"I found a maintenance tunnel."
"They've escaped into the old subway system beneath the bank."
Dante immediately understood.
"The Raven planned this from the beginning."
"They wanted everyone separated."
Suddenly—
A slow clap echoed through the vault.
Everyone turned.
A man stepped from the shadows.
Black suit.
Silver tie.
Perfect posture.
Dante's expression hardened instantly.
"Victor."
Luca stared in disbelief.
"No..."
It couldn't be.
Victor Romano.
For twelve years, he had served as one of Dante's most trusted advisers.
He had attended every strategy meeting.
Every family council.
Every peace negotiation.
He knew every Rossi safehouse.
Every emergency protocol.
Every weakness.
Victor smiled politely.
"I'm afraid this is where our paths divide."
Luca raised his pistol.
"You betrayed us?"
Victor sighed.
"Such an ugly word."
"I prefer..."
He adjusted his cufflinks.
"...'fulfilled my original assignment.'"
Silence filled the vault.
Dante never took his eyes off him.
"You were never Rossi."
Victor shook his head.
"I was never yours."
Edward Sterling laughed bitterly.
"So..."
"Even I was being used."
Victor smiled.
"You served your purpose."
Edward's smile vanished.
"You arrogant—"
Before he could finish...
Victor fired.
One shot.
Clean.
Precise.
The bullet struck Edward's shoulder, spinning him to the ground.
Aria gasped.
Victor calmly lowered the pistol.
"You talk too much."
Dante fired immediately.
Victor had already moved.
The bullet struck only concrete.
Smoke grenades exploded across the vault.
Within seconds...
Visibility disappeared again.
"Protect Aria!" Dante shouted.
Rossi soldiers formed a defensive circle.
Through the smoke came Victor's voice.
"You still don't understand."
"This was never about money."
"Never about territory."
"It was always about her."
Another explosion rocked the underground chamber.
Part of the ceiling collapsed.
Steel beams crashed between Dante and Aria.
"Dante!"
"I'm here!"
He tried climbing over the wreckage.
Another section collapsed.
The path was completely blocked.
Luca grabbed Dante's arm.
"The ceiling is coming down!"
"I don't care!"
"You will if she dies because you buried yourself!"
For one agonizing second...
Dante froze.
Luca was right.
He forced himself to think.
Not react.
On the opposite side of the debris...
Aria struggled to her feet.
Dust filled the air.
The diary remained clutched tightly against her chest.
A hand suddenly reached through the smoke.
Strong.
Steady.
Alexander Harper.
"Come with me."
She looked toward the collapsed wall.
"Dante!"
Alexander's voice was urgent.
"If you stay..."
"They'll kill you."
She hesitated.
Only for a heartbeat.
Then she remembered Dante's words from their wedding night.
"If you ever want to leave... no one will stop you."
He had given her freedom.
Now...
She had to choose.
She took Alexander's hand.
Ten minutes later...
The rescue teams finally cleared the collapsed passage.
Dante sprinted into the adjoining tunnel.
Empty.
No Aria.
No Alexander.
Only the diary.
It lay on the dusty floor.
Open.
One page had been torn out.
Luca picked up a small object nearby.
A silver pendant.
Aria's pendant.
The one she had worn since childhood.
Dante closed his hand around it.
His jaw tightened.
"They took her."
At that exact moment...
Every phone inside the vault vibrated simultaneously.
A video message appeared.
Dante pressed play.
The screen showed Aria sitting inside the back of a moving black SUV.
She wasn't tied up.
She wasn't unconscious.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Dante..."
Her voice trembled.
"I'm okay."
Before she could continue...
Alexander gently placed a blanket around her shoulders.
He looked into the camera.
"I'm not your enemy."
"I've spent twenty-two years trying to protect my granddaughter."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Then why take her?"
Alexander answered as if he had heard the question.
"Because there's one place..."
"...where even the Raven cannot reach her."
The video ended.
GPS tracking failed immediately afterward.
Hours later...
Night had fallen over Boston.
The FBI had arrested Edward Sterling at the bank after emergency crews freed everyone from the sealed vault.
News helicopters filled the sky.
Every television station reported the same headline:
SENATOR EDWARD STERLING ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FEDERAL CHARGES.
Yet Dante paid no attention.
He stood alone in his office overlooking the city.
Aria's silver pendant rested in his palm.
Luca entered quietly.
"We traced Victor."
Dante looked up.
"Where?"
"He vanished."
"No bank activity."
"No passports."
"No cameras."
"It's like..."
"He never existed."
Dante walked to the investigation wall.
One photograph remained pinned at its center.
Aria.
Smiling.
Before all of this began.
He stared at it for a long moment.
Then spoke the words that sent every Rossi soldier into motion.
"Call every captain."
Luca nodded.
"We're going after the Raven?"
Dante's dark eyes never left the photograph.
"No."
"We're bringing my wife home."
Far away...
Inside a secluded mountain estate hidden deep in the forests of Vermont...
Aria stood on a balcony overlooking a frozen lake.
Alexander approached quietly.
He handed her a faded photograph.
"This was taken the day you were born."
Aria looked down.
Her breath caught.
The photograph showed her mother...
Holding a newborn baby.
Standing beside a young man with black hair and unmistakable Rossi features.
Not Dante.
Someone else.
On the back of the photograph, Elizabeth had written only seven words.
"Your father died protecting us from them."
Aria slowly looked up at Alexander.
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Who... were they?"
Alexander's face grew grave.
"The Raven."
Then he added the words that changed everything.
May you like
"And they haven't finished hunting the Harper bloodline."
