Chapter 9: The Safe Deposit Box

Chapter 9: The Safe Deposit Box

Gunfire echoed through the Rossi estate.

The once-peaceful mansion had become a battlefield.

Marble columns splintered under automatic fire.

Crystal chandeliers shattered, raining glass across the grand foyer.

Smoke drifted through the hallways.

Rossi soldiers moved with disciplined precision, taking defensive positions while escorting the household staff toward the underground shelter.

Outside, black armored SUVs blocked every exit.

This wasn't an assassination.

It was an invasion.

Dante stood at the top of the grand staircase with Aria beside him.

He calmly inserted a magazine into his pistol.

"How many?"

Luca checked the security tablet.

"Twenty-three confirmed."

"Maybe more."

"Professional?"

"Very."

"They're moving like special forces."

Dante nodded.

"They're not here to conquer the estate."

"They're buying time."

"For what?"

Dante looked toward Aria.

"For someone else."

Downstairs, explosions rocked the front entrance.

A steel security gate slowly descended from the ceiling.

It slammed into place just as another rocket struck the front doors.

The impact shook the mansion.

One of the younger guards swallowed nervously.

"They brought explosives."

Luca answered without looking away from the monitors.

"They expected a fortress."

"They came prepared."

Suddenly...

Every screen inside the security room went black.

One by one.

Then a face appeared.

A silver raven mask.

The distorted voice filled every speaker in the mansion.

"Good evening, Mr. Rossi."

Dante's expression remained unreadable.

"You've made quite a mess."

The masked figure laughed softly.

"You have something that belongs to us."

"The diary?"

"No."

"Her."

The figure pointed directly at Aria through the camera.

"Return the girl."

"This war ends tonight."

Dante stepped closer to the monitor.

"Tell your men to leave."

The masked figure tilted his head.

"You still don't understand."

"We've been watching that girl since the day she was born."

Aria felt her blood run cold.

The screen suddenly went dark again.

Luca immediately turned to Dante.

"Boss..."

"They know the security network."

"They're inside our system."

Dante answered quietly.

"No."

"They helped build it."

The realization hit everyone at once.

Someone connected to the original construction of the Rossi estate had betrayed them years ago.

A bullet shattered the nearby window.

Glass exploded across the hallway.

Dante instantly pushed Aria behind a stone pillar.

Another shot.

Then another.

The sniper had found them.

"Move!" Dante ordered.

The group rushed through a side corridor toward the underground garage.

Halfway there...

Maria, the elderly housekeeper, appeared from another hallway.

"Mr. Rossi!"

"I found this."

She handed Dante a faded envelope.

"I discovered it hidden beneath Father Gabriel's room."

The name caught Aria's attention.

"Father Gabriel..."

The priest.

Dante opened the envelope.

Inside was an old bank receipt.

Union Trust Bank.

Safe Deposit Box 217.

Owner:

Elizabeth Harper.

Not Elizabeth Sterling.

Harper.

Aria frowned.

"Harper?"

"My mother's maiden name?"

Dante slowly shook his head.

"No."

"This account was opened after your marriage records."

"So she was hiding her identity."

Attached to the receipt was a handwritten message.

Don't trust the diary alone.

The truth is inside Box 217.

Another explosion interrupted them.

The underground garage doors buckled inward.

Enemy soldiers were breaking through.

Luca shouted into his radio.

"We can't hold them much longer!"

Dante folded the receipt and slipped it into his jacket.

"We're leaving."

One of the captains looked shocked.

"Leaving the estate?"

"We've already lost the advantage."

"They expected us to stay."

"We're doing the opposite."

Within minutes, Dante's convoy burst from a hidden tunnel beneath the mansion.

Three armored SUVs accelerated into the Boston streets.

Behind them, flames rose from parts of the Rossi estate.

Aria looked back through the rear window.

"My home..."

Dante quietly corrected her.

"Our home."

She looked at him.

Despite everything happening...

Despite the bullets...

Despite the chaos...

That single word settled somewhere deep inside her heart.

Twenty minutes later...

The convoy entered an underground parking garage beneath one of Rossi Holdings' downtown office towers.

Private elevators carried them to the forty-second floor.

Only six people knew this safehouse existed.

Aria stepped into the luxurious penthouse office.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline.

For the first time that night...

Everything was quiet.

Until Dante noticed something.

His office door...

Was already open.

Luca immediately drew his weapon.

"I locked this place myself."

Dante slowly entered.

Nothing appeared stolen.

Nothing damaged.

Only one object rested neatly in the center of his desk.

A small black box.

No address.

No fingerprints.

No markings.

Inside...

Lay a single white chess piece.

The Queen.

Beneath it was a typed message.

Checkmate begins when the Queen finally learns who she is.

Aria stared at the note.

"What does it mean?"

Before Dante could answer...

His secure phone rang.

Only four people in the world knew that number.

He answered.

"This is Rossi."

A familiar voice spoke calmly.

"Mr. Rossi..."

It was a woman.

Older.

Gentle.

One Aria hadn't heard in fourteen years.

"If you want to keep your wife alive..."

The caller paused.

"...bring the key to Union Trust Bank."

Aria's eyes widened.

"No..."

She whispered.

"It can't be..."

The woman spoke again.

"Aria..."

"I've waited fourteen years to see you again."

Tears instantly filled Aria's eyes.

She would recognize that voice anywhere.

"Evelyn?"

Her childhood nanny.

The woman everyone believed had disappeared...

May you like

Was alive.
