Chapter 13: The Harper Legacy

Chapter 13: The Harper Legacy
Snow drifted silently across the mountains of northern Vermont.
The estate stood hidden among towering pine trees, invisible from the nearest road. Built from gray stone and cedar, it looked more like an old European fortress than an American residence.
For the first time in days...
Aria slept without hearing gunfire.
She woke just before dawn.
The photograph her grandfather had given her still rested on the bedside table.
Her mother.
A newborn baby.
A young man with unmistakable Rossi features.
And seven handwritten words.
Your father died protecting us from them.
She had read them at least fifty times.
They still made no sense.
Alexander Harper waited for her in the library.
A fire burned quietly in the massive stone fireplace.
Ancient family portraits lined the walls.
As Aria entered, he poured two cups of tea.
"You have your mother's habit."
She looked confused.
"What habit?"
"When something frightens you..."
He smiled sadly.
"...you search for answers instead of running."
Aria sat across from him.
"I've spent twenty-two years believing lies."
"I don't want another one."
Alexander nodded.
"You deserve the truth."
He unlocked a wooden cabinet and removed an old leather-bound family register.
The cover bore a golden crest.
Not the Sterling crest.
Not the Rossi crest.
A soaring hawk.
"The Harper family built shipping companies, hospitals, and charities long before organized crime ruled Boston."
He opened the register.
"Your grandmother believed wealth should protect people."
"Your mother believed the same."
"And your father..."
He paused.
"...gave his life trying to protect both of you."
Aria leaned forward.
"Who was he?"
Alexander looked directly into her eyes.
"His name was Matteo Rossi."
The room became silent.
Aria stared at him.
"Rossi?"
Alexander nodded.
"The older brother of Dante Rossi."
Her breath caught.
"No..."
"That means..."
"Dante is your uncle by blood."
Aria's face turned pale.
"The marriage..."
"It wasn't planned that way."
Alexander's expression hardened.
"Edward never knew the truth."
"He believed Matteo died before learning Elizabeth was pregnant."
"But Matteo knew."
"He left evidence proving your identity."
"The Raven hunted him before he could expose it."
Across Boston...
Dante stood inside Rossi Headquarters.
The family council had assembled.
Nearly forty captains filled the conference hall.
No one spoke.
Dante placed Aria's silver pendant on the table.
"They've taken my wife."
His voice was calm.
"But this war stopped being personal the moment twelve of our men were murdered."
He looked around the room.
"The Raven believes fear controls this city."
He slowly stood.
"They're wrong."
Every captain rose with him.
One after another.
Luca unfolded a city map across the table.
"We've identified nineteen Raven safehouses."
"Eight shell companies."
"Three judges on their payroll."
"And dozens of financial accounts."
Dante nodded once.
"Hit them all."
For the next forty-eight hours...
Boston exploded into controlled chaos.
Federal investigators mysteriously received anonymous evidence.
Corrupt officials resigned overnight.
Illegal bank accounts were frozen.
Three warehouses used by the Raven were raided.
A private airfield was seized.
Every move had been planned months in advance.
The Raven wasn't losing money.
They were losing invisibility.
Deep inside an abandoned church beneath South Boston...
Victor Romano watched the news in silence.
One of his men entered hurriedly.
"They're dismantling everything."
Victor smiled faintly.
"Good."
The man looked confused.
"Good?"
Victor turned off the television.
"Dante is attacking the branches."
"He still hasn't found the roots."
Meanwhile...
Aria wandered through another wing of the Harper estate.
At the end of a long hallway stood a locked room.
Its door bore the same hawk crest as the family register.
Alexander appeared behind her.
"You're ready."
He unlocked the door.
Inside...
The walls were covered with photographs.
Maps.
Letters.
Newspaper clippings.
The room looked eerily familiar.
Just like Dante's investigation office.
Except every board focused on one person.
Dante Rossi.
Aria frowned.
"You've been watching him."
"For years."
Alexander nodded.
"I had to know whether he became the man his brother hoped he would."
She turned toward him.
"My father knew Dante?"
"They were inseparable."
Alexander handed her an old photograph.
Two young men laughed beside a sailboat.
One was Matteo.
The other...
A teenage Dante.
"They weren't just brothers."
"They were best friends."
Tears filled Aria's eyes.
"He never told me."
"He couldn't."
Alexander answered quietly.
"Because he never knew you survived."
That evening...
Aria stepped onto the balcony overlooking the frozen lake.
She missed Boston.
She missed the Rossi estate.
Most of all...
She missed Dante.
Not because she needed protection.
Because, for the first time in her life...
Someone had made her feel safe.
Behind her, Alexander spoke softly.
"If you wish..."
"I'll take you back tomorrow."
Aria remained silent.
After a long moment, she answered.
"Not yet."
"I have to finish reading my mother's diary."
Later that night...
She reached the final pages.
Most had been damaged by water.
Only one entry remained completely readable.
It was dated two days before Elizabeth's death.
If anything happens to me...
Aria must never learn about Project Raven until she is strong enough to survive the truth.
Because if she discovers what she really inherited...
Every powerful person in America will hunt her.
Aria's heartbeat quickened.
She turned the page.
A folded document slipped onto the floor.
It wasn't another letter.
It was a blueprint.
Across the top, in bold black letters, were two words.
PROJECT RAVEN
Stamped beneath them was an official government seal.
And at the bottom...
A list of founding members.
The very first name froze the blood in her veins.
Anthony Rossi.
May you like
Dante's father.
