Chapter 1 - The Word That Changed Everything

The hockey stick hit the kitchen tile with a hard wooden crack.

Nathan Cole barely heard it.

All he heard was the little girl’s trembling voice.

“Daddy.”

Four-year-old Lily stared at him through tears.

Grace remained curled protectively around her daughter, one hand pressed against her injured shoulder.

Victoria stood several feet away in her white dress, suddenly looking less like Nathan’s elegant fiancée and more like a stranger caught inside his home.

Nathan looked from Lily to Grace.

Then back to Lily.

“What did she call me?”

Grace swallowed.

“Nathan, please.”

“What did she call me?”

Lily pressed herself closer to Grace.

Victoria recovered first.

“This is insane.”

Nathan turned toward her.

Victoria pointed at Grace.

“She’s manipulating you.”

Grace laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“By letting you hit me with a hockey stick?”

“I was defending myself.”

Nathan looked at the stick lying near Victoria’s heels.

Grace was on the floor.

Lily was shaking.

There was nothing defensive about what he had walked into.

Nathan moved toward them.

Victoria grabbed his arm.

“Don’t touch that child.”

His head snapped toward her.

That child.

Not Lily.

Not the little girl.

That child.

Nathan pulled his arm away.

He crouched beside Grace.

“Can you stand?”

“I can.”

She tried.

Pain folded her back down.

Lily began crying again.

Nathan immediately reached toward her, then stopped.

He had spent three months seeing Lily around the house.

She colored at the breakfast table while Grace prepared coffee.

She fell asleep on the sofa while Grace finished laundry.

She sometimes watched him from doorways with a strange expression he had never understood.

Now he understood too much.

“Grace.”

She looked at him.

“Tell me the truth.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“Nathan, don’t.”

He never looked away from Grace.

“Is Lily my daughter?”

Grace’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

The answer struck harder than any scream could have.

Nathan stood slowly.

His daughter.

Four years old.

Living under his roof.

Sleeping two floors beneath him.

Eating at his kitchen table.

And nobody had told him.

“Why?”

Grace’s expression changed.

Fear replaced pain.

“Because five years ago your father told me exactly what would happen if I ever did.”

Nathan went still.

“My father?”

“He knew I was pregnant.”

“That’s impossible.”

“He knew before you did.”

Victoria backed toward the counter.

Nathan noticed.

Grace noticed too.

Grace’s face hardened.

“And Victoria knew.”

Nathan turned.

Victoria froze.

“That’s a lie.”

Grace reached inside the pocket of her maid’s uniform.

Her fingers shook as she pulled out a small silver key.

“I came here because your father left something behind.”

Victoria’s face lost all color.

Nathan stared at the key.

“What does it open?”

Grace looked at Victoria.

“The one thing she has been trying to find since the day I arrived.”

Before Nathan could ask another question, Victoria suddenly lunged forward.

She wasn’t reaching for Grace.

She was reaching for the key.

Nathan caught her wrist.

Victoria gasped.

And in that instant, Nathan knew.

Grace had not come into his house by accident.

May you like

Victoria had not attacked her out of jealousy.

And Lily’s existence was not the only secret buried inside the Cole family.
