Chapter 9 - The Burning Archive

Smoke filled the underground room.
Nathan grabbed the nearest extinguisher.
Daniel found another.
Together they smothered the flames before they reached the main cabinets.
Whoever had started the fire had escaped through a maintenance tunnel.
Grace discovered the tunnel behind a panel.
It led toward the old greenhouse.
By the time police arrived, the intruder was gone.
But the archive survived.
Barely.
Detective Reyes sealed the room.
Richard Vale’s attorneys immediately tried to block access.
Reyes ignored them.
“This is now part of an active criminal investigation.”
Nathan watched Victoria.
She had not spoken since the blackout.
Reyes asked everyone where they had been.
Victoria had been in the dining room.
Mrs. Alvarez confirmed it.
So Victoria had not started the fire.
Someone else was working for Richard.
Daniel opened the first surviving cabinet.
Inside were decades of corporate records.
Shell companies.
Private loans.
Transfers.
Settlement agreements.
Nathan recognized several names.
Politicians.
Developers.
Executives.
Richard Vale had built a private network of leverage.
Grace opened a smaller drawer.
Inside were folders labeled with individual names.
Nathan Cole.
Charles Cole.
Grace Bennett.
Victoria Vale.
Lily Bennett.
Grace stopped breathing.
“There’s a file for Lily.”
Nathan opened it.
The first page was a DNA laboratory request.
Dated four years earlier.
The result showed a 99.99 percent probability of biological paternity.
Nathan Cole.
Nathan stared.
“They tested her.”
Grace’s face went white.
“I never authorized this.”
Attached was a photograph of Lily’s discarded pacifier.
Someone had taken it from daycare.
Nathan’s anger turned almost physical.
Richard had known for years.
The next page was worse.
Contingency Options.
One section discussed permanent relocation.
Another discussed custody intervention.
A third recommended declaring Grace legally unfit.
Nathan looked at Detective Reyes.
“This is the same plan they activated today.”
She nodded.
Then Grace found another sheet.
At the bottom was a signature.
Victoria Vale.
Grace handed it to Nathan.
Victoria stepped backward.
“No.”
Nathan read the date.
Three years earlier.
Victoria had approved legal funding for Project Lark.
Lily.
Nathan looked up.
“You signed this.”
“I didn’t know what Project Lark was.”
Grace whispered.
“You knew.”
Victoria shook her head.
Nathan’s voice broke.
“You knew I had a daughter for three years.”
Victoria suddenly screamed.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“Yes, I knew.”
Nathan stared at her.
Victoria’s face twisted.
“And do you know what I was told?”
Nobody answered.
“I was told that if Lily ever entered your life, my father would destroy you.”
She looked toward the shelves.
“All of this wasn’t built to control Grace.”
May you like
Victoria whispered.
“It was built to control you.”
